Publisher's Summary

Lydia, Dean, and Robyn don't know one another...yet. Each is facing difficult challenges: Lydia is still wearing the scars from her traumatic childhood. Wealthy and successful, she leads a lonely and disjointed existence. Dean is a young, unemployed, single dad whose life is going nowhere. Robyn is 18. Gorgeous, popular, and intelligent, she entered her first year of college confident about her dream to become a pediatrician. Now she's failing her classes. Now she's falling in love for the first time.

Lydia, Dean, and Robyn live very different lives, but each of them, independently, has always felt that something was missing. What they don't know is that a letter is about to arrive that will turn their lives upside down. It's a letter containing a secret - one that will bind them together and show them what love and family and friendship really mean.

A literary gem, The Making of Us will remind listeners of the miracles that happen when we bring life into the world and share our lives with those we love.

Great entertainment

I have recently discovered this author and this is the third book I've listened to in a row. They're not great "mysteries" (my favorite genre) and probably too unbelievable to satisfy someone who is looking for great literary fiction...and YET, the stories are "unputdownable." The author somehow makes you care for these implausible characters and the twists and turns of their lives. She can count me as one of her newest fans.

Best book I've read in a long time!

I was hooked within the first 30 minutes. There are so many characters and the narrator is brilliant at differentiating them all. It's not a romantic idea, (the basis of the book) but somehow I still felt swept up by the storytelling. This is my second book to read by Lisa Jewell. The first, "I Found You" was also captivating, but I think this one was better. Highly recommend!

Extraordinary Stories

I am probably not Lisa Jewel’s target demographic, but I love her stories. The characters are relatable and real. Helen Duff’s narration is wonderful. The Making of Us is my 5th listen in a row from Lisa Jewell with Duff’s narration. I Found You, The Third Wife, Before I Met You and Then She Was Gone are all amazing. Keep them coming Lisa Jewell, this 54 year old American male will continue to listen.

Similarities

I enjoyed this book. The accents were distinguishable. I noticed references for American listeners. I assume the British version does not do this.

unique storyline

I thought the overall storyline was unique. I'm tired of characters who drink and do drugs, tho. Not everyone does! The story was a little boring at times. I thought it didn't need to go as in-depth to the characters' pasts. I got bored during those parts. For the most part, the narrator was great at using different tones for different characters. I hated the way she said "wow" though. It made me cringe after the first 10 times!

I love this author!

I haven't been disappointed with this author yet! This book winds the lives of 3 strangers together in a very unusual way. On the surface it may seem contrived but the way it plays out is really organic. I enjoyed it and will move on to my next Lisa Jewell read (listen).
