Publisher's summary

"Feel good fiction [is] at its finest" (Susan Wiggs) in this New York Times bestselling author's new series, where after years of putting her family first, Genevieve Prentice is making a fresh start—but it’s never easy to leave the past behind.

Widowed young, Genevieve Prentice dedicated her life to raising her four children. Now, though, they’re all grown and scattered to the wind, and Genevieve is ready for a change. In a flash of inspiration, she puts her home on the market and heads to Lake in the Clouds, Colorado, to renovate a rustic waterfront lodge with her sister. But just as they begin, Genevieve gets the shock of a lifetime: the arrival of her son.

Jake Prentice built a career out of being dependable, one that left him perennially stressed and overworked. Finally heeding his mother’s words of wisdom, he’s quit his job and is ready to find out what truly makes him happy. And now, as he stands surrounded by open sky and fresh, pine-scented air, he’s got no regrets . . . until former colleague Tess Crenshaw appears at the lake, forcing him to reassess what—and who—he really wants.

As they work together to renovate the lodge, Genevieve and Jake embark on a heartfelt and inspiring journey to learn about themselves, each other, and the true meaning of family.

Solid beach read - add trigger warnings

This is a solid beach read, I liked it.

There were a few instances where I shook my head, such as the matriarch ignoring her adult children (especially when I learned the reason her adult children were in disagreement). I though the lead character Jake was a solid character, but funnily, rather his character develop and mature, the author chose to have him sucker punch someone and try to kill him.

And there should be a trigger warning added for domestic violence and also for miscarriage.

Just so much thrown in to this book that may not have been necessary to get valid points across.

I’m thinking if this is a series that more characters will develop.

To be honest. I do like the characters, but I might skip this one and start with the next in the series. I’m still rating it 4 stars because it is a decent book.

Another winner by Emily March

I thoroughly enjoyed this beginning to the new series Lake in the Clouds … it’s inspirational, complex, entertaining, and passionate. I love the strong family dynamics and the traditions and themes along the way. After reading it I kinda want a cuckoo clock … and I for sure want to visit Germany, and Colorado, oh and get on the lake with my fam. Definitely worth the wait… and will be ready to pre order book 2 whenever it is ready. My only issue with this book is the narrator. Amy Landon and Kathe Mazur have a more modern style of narrating that flows better with Emily’s books. REALLY hoping Audible will make a change going forward in this series.

I Loved the Plot

I enjoyed the story. Good plot. However, some transitions between chaptesr were ackward and confusing. It left me wondering, "What just happened?"

Cute & fun

This book was good. It’s like a lifetime movie. Follow the family and see how they grow. I wouldn’t say there’s a cliffhanger but there will be more to come.

Misleading

The title and the teaser are misleading. I thought this book was about two women starting a new life. Turns out it is actually a romance story of one of her children. I don't really care for romance novels. So disappointed.

Not what I was hoping

A little too corny, the characters' names somewhat confusing . Also I never did understand what or where or whose the ranch was . Wasn't worth going back to figure it out.

Very relatable characters.

Audiobook

Very Elin Hildenbrand-ish. Loved it. The main character was so relatable for me -a 60-something mother and grandmother dealing with the challenges of parenting adult children. She’s been a widow for many years, having raised her children mainly alone, and man, is she having a hard time letting go. But, she makes a Herculean effort to do so. She sells everything she owns and moves to Colorado to join her sister and remodel a resort. What an adventure she has, and how it knocks her adult children on their asses! I loved the story, and look forward to reading the sequel.
