Publisher's summary

A groundbreaking plan to prevent and reverse Alzheimer's disease that fundamentally changes how we understand cognitive decline.

Everyone knows someone who has survived cancer, but until now no one knows anyone who has survived Alzheimer's disease.

In this paradigm shifting book, Dale Bredesen, MD, offers real hope to anyone looking to prevent and even reverse Alzheimer's disease and cognitive decline. Revealing that AD is not one condition, as it is currently treated, but three, The End of Alzheimer's outlines 36 metabolic factors (micronutrients, hormone levels, sleep) that can trigger "downsizing" in the brain. The protocol shows us how to rebalance these factors using lifestyle modifications like taking B12, eliminating gluten, or improving oral hygiene.

The results are impressive. Of the first 10 patients on the protocol, nine displayed significant improvement with three to six months; since then the protocol has yielded similar results with hundreds more. Now, The End of Alzheimer's brings new hope to a broad audience of patients, caregivers, physicians, and treatment centers with a fascinating look inside the science and a complete step-by-step plan that fundamentally changes how we treat and even think about AD.

Critic reviews

"The End of Alzheimer's, for the first time, synthesizes the latest science into a practical plan that can reverse Alzheimer's and dramatically improve brain health and function. If you have a brain, read this book." (Mark Hyman, MD, author of the number one New York Times best seller Eat Fat, Get Thin)

"Alzheimer’s is a disease for which there is no cure. Dr. Bredesen’s experimental program gives me hope that there are actions we can all take to care for our brains and keep Alzheimer’s at bay." (Maria Shriver, Today Show)

"The End of Alzheimer’s is a monumental work. Dr. Bredesen completely recontextualizes this devastating condition away from a mysterious and unsolvable process to one that is both preventable and, yes, reversible. Pinning our hopes on pharmaceutical research to develop a miraculous wonder drug has left both physicians and patients empty handed. But now, this comprehensive approach offers solid results, bringing hope to so many." (David Perlmutter, MD, Board-certified neurologist and author, number one New York Times best seller, Grain Brain, and Brain Maker)

Should Have A PDF

I found this book to be pretty technical. Listening to neurochemistry and later having long web addresses read to me was not very useful I listen because I'm doing something else physically- I can't always stop and write something down.

I suppose I was also looking for more of a how-to manual, and many times the book warns us that each situation is different. Maybe that's realistic, maybe they are 'covering their behinds' - but it was a long book with a multitude of suggestions and I'm left quite unsure if I should make any changes. [i already do many of the dietary, sleep, exercise and toxin avoidance strategies suggested.]

The author suggests quite a number of tests and I wouldn't have more than a glimmer of insight into the next steps to take when I had those test results.

I suppose I'm either too far gone in cerebral damage or perhaps the book is written for a different audience- functional physicians, perhaps? It made clear to me that I would need to hire someone with more knowledge than I have to oversee it if I wanted to implement this program.

Maybe having a PDF would have helped . . .

Both exciting and frustrating

In The End of Alzheimer's, Dr. Bredesen describes the multi-step therapy he has developed for each of the several types of AD, which has slowed or even reversed AD in patients. Since I'm fairly knowledgeable on this subject, I found the research credible and exciting! However, if you're looking for a single pill or a quick fix or something that won't require any change or effort on your part, you'll be disappointed. AD is a multi-faceted and complex disease. It's likely there will never be just one medication that will conquer it. Dr. Bredesen shares his frustration that our current drug approval system is focused on monotherapies, with no flexibility for multi-part therapies. Doctors 'don't do nutrition' was another source of frustration. I'm glad that Dr. Bresdesen is getting the word out about "Recode," (Reverse Cognitive Decline) which is what he calls his therapy. If you're serious about trying this, you'll need an open-minded doctor and/or naturopath, a hard cover copy of the book so you can check your blood work results against Dr. Bredesen's recommended levels, and a willingness to change your diet, take supplements, and start exercising. This is ground-breaking research that will unfortunately probably be largely ignored by our current medical system. So read it yourself and be your own advocate!

Great book & protocol, but needs PDF to reference

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This book is full of useful and cutting edge information, however the level of detail needs a corresponding PDF reference to review the actual recommendations and protocol.

Incredible, and not just about Alzheimer's

This book is nothing short of amazing. Unfortunately, I found the book to be poorly organized and the nutritional section in particular was weak, which is unfortunate given how much excellent content is not available online concerning whole foods based ketogenic diets.

That said, this is absolutely required reading for anyone who either want to avoid Alzheimer's, who knows someone who has or may come to have it, or for anyone else who just wants to be healthy (i.e. for everyone). This content is turning the medical world upside down and it gives me great hope for the future. It's also great to see a ketogenic diet being one part of the solution after so many decades of the low fat, high carb approach which mistakenly led people to thinking that Honey Nut Cheerios is a health food.

world altering if it is true

notebook stands to change the world more from a medical standpoint than this one. Although the target audience must be clinical providers since the science presented is incredibly lofty for the average person. Still, the information here is invaluable for those of us at risk and taking care of family members with Alzheimer's disease. A must-read for everyone.

The definitive treatise on the multifactorial nature of cognitive decline

Dr Bredesen’s evidence based and comprehensive approach to “patching the 36 holes in the roof” is enlightening and inspires hope that something can be done to halt and reverse this insidious disease. Chapter 4 “how to give yourself Alzheimer’s” is a message to ALL people, even even with normal cognitive function, that the food you are eating and the manner in which you live your life is setting the stage for chronic sugar imbalance or chronic digestive issues or environmental toxins that trigger a more aggressive deterioration and THEN you can go to a doctor for your memory problems. Its not too late at that point but we all should be making small cumulative changes that reduces the inflammatory burden on the system that can ultimately prevent the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s.

Life Changing, but you will need to buy book

Life changing book. I loved the audio, except (why only 3 stars overall) the written protocol isn't available in the audio version library on audible. I have written Dr. Bredesen and even though I have purchased the audio version I need to buy the book to get the protocol in print. Often audios provide a PDF version of appendix or lists and quantities so that I don't need to transcribe the information. Disappointing.

I’m powering information

I listened to this book because I’m a caregiver for mostly Alzheimer’s patients, but I learned so much about myself I am excited there is hope. I wish more people would listen and learn that no one has to decline like this and it’s in your power to make changes now no matter your income status.

A message of hope

The book and protocol presented (ReCoDe), Reverse Cognitive Decline, provides a detailed method it assess your cognitive status, how to determine known causes of cognitive decline, and most importantly how to reverse its effects. If you or your family is affected by SCI, MCI, or Alzheimer’s this is a ray of hope in what is given as a devastating and bleak future for millions. Brilliant research shared openly so recovery is possible. I am sure the story will resonate with many and be the only and life saving life raft fo many. Enjoy and share.
