Publisher's summary

The universal symbol of the Christian faith is neither a crib nor a manger, but a gruesome cross. Yet many people are unclear about its meaning, and cannot understand why Christ had to die. In this magisterial and best-selling book, John Stott explains the significance of Christ's cross and answers the objections commonly brought against biblical teaching on the atonement.

John Stott's modern classic is as sharp and pertinent as ever it was. It combines an excellent biblical exposition and a characteristically thoughtful study of Christian belief with a searching call to the church to live under the cross.

Set Your Heart Aright

Stott guides heart and head alike to Christ’s suffering, so that we both acknowledge His authority and learn to love Him for His compassion. Each paragraph is an antidote to poor thinking, yet at the same time this is no mere intellectual exercise. Stott instead shows a path to Christ’s painful and effective surgery for our heart, learning to love the One that can alone remove our bitterness, our insecurity, our pitiable self-love. Simon Vance’s cadence gives a warm and thoughtful presentation of this most valuable of books.

Profound

Just push through. If it is hard. Keep listening. So full of treasure. The cross of Christ is such a solidly biblically grounded scripture in which you will learn much about Christ.

This is an incredible audible book

This book is a Christian classic, and rightfully so. And I honestly could not think of a better narrator for this particular work than Simon Vance, who seemed to perfectly capture the tone of John Stott’s writing. What we have here is a magnificent classic that, in both content and narration, makes for an enjoyable listen. I’ve listened to a lot of audiobooks, and I rarely comment. But I couldn’t help myself with this production.

A masterpiece

It took me months to complete, following the verses of the Bible. Nevertheless, a masterpiece one of the greatest books I have read

Pithy implications of the cross of Christ

There's a lot to absorb from this book. I feel compelled to get the written version to highlight the many succinct points Stott makes. I'm sure I will listen to this audiobook more than once. It sometimes seems to follow rabbit trails, but always comes back to the cross. Stott treats a lot of heterodox theological issues in juxtaposition to orthodox ones, so it can be hard to follow if you can't listen straight through in one sitting.

Finally I know Him

I enjoyed the deep dive and willingness of the author to show Jesus Christ as He is and what He did for us by all the Grace and Mercy we can possibly imagine. Yeshua chose to save us by losing his life and setting in motion His flock to come back to Him from our evilness and sinful nature.

I would highly recommend this to anyone who is DEEPLY troubled and in Suffering. You may have lost a loved one, become separated or divorced, or facing a devastating mental illness or even cancer. A person who has been seeking a deep and profound relationship with someone to truly Love them as they are, when everyone else has only cared about Love of themselves.

This book if you let it, will open up your heart into an experience with Jesus Christ you have likely never experienced inside a church, temple or a synagogue. He will break you and build you back up into His loving arms, again. Amen and Amen. Worthy is the Lamb and His Blood that has set me Free. Selah.
