Publisher's summary

Two brothers face the end of all they know as the Earth is absorbed into something called War World. On Earth, they were up-and-coming duo competitors in ACS (Armored Combat Sports), and it is with those skills they just might survive.

A LitRPG Grimdark novel.

My flesh knew what to do as I spun again, pushing off his huge body to set myself a few steps past his now exposed back, planting feet, arresting momentum—only to jack its kinetic energy into legs pushing off stone, axe lowered, behind me, coming forward in sync with my body, taut muscles exploding as the axe came over my shoulder, pistoning into the top of his head, planting a heraldic flag to the f--k yous of history.

The Bones of our Fathers, book one in the series Blood Brothers

Come on, Dozer; let’s see what you and Daddy can do.

I pulsed what I wanted over the bond. The floodgates opened. He scraped his hoof, in imitation of Taurean improvosu, head lowered, billows of repressed loss from snorting snout, and he was off, a locomotive with only one destination and one purpose: carnage. I stepped a breath from his shadow, dialed in 1-800-Die F--kers Die.

Love this book

This is a Litrpg book and I really enjoyed this book. Spoilers ahead. It’s about two brothers and a mother who gets sucked into a tutorial with their pet pig lol and have to survive to go back to the world after it got changed through the system.
This book really got me because I recently lost my mom to cancer and the boys lose their mom as well. I really felt the pain that they felt through the near ration. Patrick O’Connor is an OK narrator. I wouldn’t say he’s one of the best but I would definitely say he wasn’t one of the worst narrator’s other listen to. This was my first book married to buy him and I’ll definitely listen to another one of the new recent again. And I really enjoyed this authors book I cannot wait to the second one comes out.

Not Your Standard LITRPG

A well told story of a family of fighters as the world is forced into a battle game. Very different from others I have read and that just makes it better.
Narration was decent though I did notice a few rough spots like pauses in the middle of a sentence or the music cutting in or out at weird places.
Overall a good listen and I am ready for book two.

loved this book so much I bought the second one and it's just as good I really like how the MC hears music when he fights and you get to hear it too. this book is great my only complaint is how short it was.

good lit rpg but a bit short

Over all I enjoyed this story enough to get the second one, and plan to get the third one when it releases. I just wish it was longer. I could see sales on this story explode if they were released as an omnibus.

Great story and characters

This was my first time listening to a little instead of just reading it and I was impressed with the voice acting and the overall story. The characters were fun and inventive, and I found myself wanting a pet just like dozer myself. I'm excited to hear what classes are available and chosen in the future. I'm starting the next one tonight!

A LitRPG Grimdark novel from a great author!

JD Glasscock writes some great stories and The Bones of Our Fathers is no exception! This A LitRPG Grimdark novel was dare I say a fun adventure a look into the world the Blood Brothers are creating. I look forward to book 2 in the series! Audio Version: Patrick O'Connor does a great job with the narration, main character, and all of the supporting characters as well.

Definitely Has Potential

There is plenty to like about several elements of this story. The “brothers,” the pig, the weapons competition, and the world change are all appreciable (though the world change is a bit too much like Dungeon Crawler Carl). The backstory of Mase and Dom is a strength of the story.
Unfortunately, there are also several flaws in the writing. It may seem like a petty complaint, but the writing accidentally changes perspective from one sentence to the next. It is supposed to be 1st person, but there are dozens of examples of the writing saying things like, “I saw my brother and felt a wave of relief. His brother crushed him in a hug that returned the feeling.” It is poor writing, and even worse editing. The fight scenes also shift to sentence fragments. It could be considered a clever style shift to emphasize the chaos of battle, which would be acceptable. But there are also a few slightly corny elements as well, like the rapidly formed romantic bond between their mother and the stranger they rescue. Within minutes of meeting there is a (genuine) pledge to protect her with his life. Um, really?
The narration is good. The attempt at an Irish accent misses the mark completely and sounds more Jamaican than anything. The intense moments are a bit flat, but the pacing and intonation are solid. Metal music plays for the first minute of fight scenes, while I personally don’t really want or enjoy that, the volume is low enough that it doesn’t overpower the narration at all. When Jeff Hays and Sound Booth Theater does it the music is very low key and not at all distracting. I still prefer not hearing it but they do it well. In this story it was okay but does draw attention away from the fight a bit.
If changes were made based on my comments I would continue the series. As it is I am likely finished with it.

Pretty good

enjoyable storyline overall, the grimdark aspects of it add a nice layer of danger that usually isn't seen. the narration is fantastic and suits the theme very well with a deeper voice. Negative on that the battle music is a bit loud when it comes on though.

it's a shorter listen but worth it I think.

A few bones to pick

Loves me some grimdark, and LITRPG is my thing, so this was something I was naturally drawn towards. The MC's are great and the story is solid.

A couple of quick contentions, and this is on the Audible side of things. There are breaks that happen in the middle of some sentences, and I don't know if the narrator made an error and then reworded stuff, but didn't blend it back in as seamlessly as he'd thought but it certainly seemed that way. Also, with a name like O'connor I would have expected a better Irish accent. I don't know what that was but it wasn't irish, and I'm 90% scot-irish with grandparents right out of Ireland to compare it to, so it bothered me. Otherwise, the guy did a nice job, I just think he needs to gain some proficiency and practice his accents a bit more. The real drag for me was the music, it was jarring and unneeded. I don't know if Glasscock wanted to emulate SBT or O'connor did, but it distracts more than enhancing the listening experience.

OK, now that I've made it sound like I hated the book, I really didn't. Its good. Really fun and something I think you'll enjoy.
