Homicide is always an abomination, but there is something exceptionally disturbing about the victim discovered in a high, lonely place: a corpse with a mouth full of sand, abandoned at a crime scene seemingly devoid of tracks or useful clues. Though it goes against his better judgment, Navajo tribal police lieutenant Joe Leaphorn cannot help but suspect the hand of a supernatural killer. There is palpable evil in the air, and Leaphorn's pursuit of a wolf-witch is leading him where even the bravest men fear - on a chilling trail that winds perilously between mysticism and murder.

You can't stop making the wrong conclusions. What the hell will happen next? Crazy good.

This one opens the door. ......the trap door.

The story relies heavily on Navajo Anthropology, and is amazing in that respect. Definitely worth reading. However, if you're just starting with Tony Hillerman's books, I'd recommend Dance Hall of the Dead.

Good, but not Hillerman's best.

Interesting story, but disappointed that most of the action transpired not around Detective Joe Leaphorn but another character. Good background info on Navajo customs, beliefs, etc.
These are great stories and George Guidell IS Leaphorn to me.

Not Enough Leaphorn But Still Intriging

This book held true to all of my expectations and kept me guessing right until the very end. I thoroughly enjoyed the listen.

A Worthy Hillerman/Leaphorn novel
