An entertaining book for exploring the southwest

A few months ago I stumbled upon Dead Run, which led me to Tony Hillerman as I decided it was time to explore and relearn the desert southwest I played in twenty years ago. The Great Taos Bank Robbery is a collection of essays that run the gamut of local politics, local history and modern epidemiology. Somehow the stories connect well because of the land they're centered on, despite exploring many different topics over many centuries (and millennia) of human history.

The author does a great job of keeping things light, entertaining, but still informs and educates. Gotta love that blend.

How Tony Hillerman Got His Start

Yes, it’s Tony Hillerman from his first youthful stories as a cub reporter. He was amazing from the very beginning, when no one knew his name other than the local readers. Immediately, you feel the same quick-witted, careful observation that’s part of his novels; but also, his warmth, humility, humor, and love of New Mexico.

This edition of The Great Taos Bank Robbery has even more stories than the first release, and a foreword written by Hillerman's daughter, who is just as enchanting as her father.

Great mix: history, geography&colorful characters

Tony's old school journalism training and talent are displayed well in this collection. I purchased this book for background research on some fiction I'm writing, and the stories were much more varied and entertaining than I expected. The title piece is pure entertainment, but other stories are more sober as Tony writes about the people and the culture of New Mexico. I'm not a personal fan of desert climates, but reading Tony's collection makes me want to visit New Mexico.

This Review Needs a Title...

Super great stories about New Mexico...insights into the state. A couple of notable ones are about the 1967 Tierra Amarilla riots and the Navajo who couldn't get the wire strung. Classic New Mexico tales--read 'em!

Can't help it, Hillerman fan loves his voice!

Tony is departed, but we have his voice for posterity. This group of stories which he found fascinating is a real treat. I'll probably listen to this repeatedly, just to bring him back, if only in voice and remembrance. Can't get enough of Tony and his daughter-novelist Anne Hillerman.

Not What I Expected and Wonderful

I thought this was about a robbery in Taos, instead it's a story about Taos and I loved it! We miss you Tony . . .

New Mexico stories from the inside.

Tony Hillerman has the concise descriptive style that appears expansive when exercised on the scale necessary for the landscape. That style comes from much practice. While many of these earlier works are verbose by comparison, they do show humor and a real feeling for the subject matter. The narrator tends to go into a monotone when the story get verbose and drawn out. He reads alot of it as if it were a text book, not an entertainment.

All things considered, I enjoyed and recommend this book.

Great Stories about New Mexico

As a native of New Mexico I have read all I can of Tony Hillerman. He was a great writer and both fiction an factual are so ingrained in what he wrote that I feel I am back in my home state. This book was especially fun.
