Publisher's summary

She never dreamed of the happiness....

Cordelia McQueen is little more than a prisoner in her father’s house until he barters her off to a stranger in exchange for land and water rights. Now in a new place and married to a man as big and bold as untamed Texas, Cordelia prepares to live within her husband’s shadow and help him achieve his goals.

Only he could promise her....

Dallas has one driving ambition: to put West Texas on the map. Convinced he’s too harsh a man to be loved, he expects nothing except a son from his shy wife. But with each passing day, Dallas discovers a woman of immense hidden courage and fortitude. He is determined to give her his heart, even if it means letting her go to achieve her own dreams and find her own glory.

2nd Times a Charm

What an all together, well rounded story. Dallas married Amelia, she goes and falls in love with his brother Houston before they get to consummate their marriage...thankfully,then he makes a deal with a nasty neighbor to provide them with rights to water from his land if he marries the daughter. They marry, have their ups and downs.Dallas learns patience while Cordelia learns to trust.Their love grows, their town flourishes, but not without some loss and heartache. This was a real tear jerker.I look forward to the next book in the series and hope there is love in a future story for Raliegh.

Good but a bit unbelievable

Not as good as the first book and it was a bit unbelievable that this shy woman was able to build and manage a hotel but still a cute romantic story with very good narration.

3.5 stars

Honestly, the only reason I read this was to see any mention of Houston and Amelia from the previous book. I fell hard for those two. I recommend not reading any of the books in this series as a standalone.

This book was actually more heartbreaking than the last and I cried way too many times for an adult reading a fictional romance. But all the pain felt very historically accurate for a country considered 3rd world at the time.

We're introduced to two new characters in this installment, Cordelia and Rawley; both of whom have lived as slaves to their families. Watching the two of them find themselves with freedom from pain and fear in Dallas Leigh's home and care was the most touching thing. The love story did not touch me like Houston/Amelia's, but the transformation of these two lives really made the entire book for me.

I doubt I would reread this as I did Texas Destiny, but it's still a wonderful read.
