Publisher's Summary

Chase Benteen Calder was bound to wrest a fortune from Montana land, where the whisper of riches swept across a sea of buffalo grass. With Lorna at his side, a woman who took the tough ways of the land as her destiny, he would breathe life into his dream. Through the treacherous Texas prairie, the perils of Indian country, and a bustling Dodge City, they forged their way to Montana. With Calder strength, they would harvest their fortune from the rich earth, on the sprawling plains of This Calder Range.

Calder Ranch is awesome.

Read in the order in which they were written of this awesome series. Really love Janet Daly's way of presenting this family as it grows along with the ranch.

Okay story

Mostly enjoyable ..the narrator was very good. Moved a bit too slow for me but, worth the credit used.

The voice doesn't match

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. However the readers British accent takes you out of time and place. Also her Mexican sounded Irish or Scottish.

Not worth using the credit

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Story could be good but can't get into it due to the AWFUL narration. Will have to try reading it instead. Never get a book with this narrator--no emotion or inflection in the reading. Just word after word.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

No inflection or emotion--VERY dry.

Wish I could give more than 5*******

Best book I've ever read/ and or listened too.

I loved the way it showed that absolute bad and then turned it 180 and showed the good. I've been looking for another series that I could absolutely get into for over a year now. Excited I found this one.

Great read!!!

Good, if you are looking for a historical romance

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I enjoyed the story, although know going in that it was written when not too much attention was given to diversity or other perspectives. You won't find balanced views about all the players in the westward movement, especially Native Americans.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

I felt like one chapter was closing and another beginning.

How could the performance have been better?

The narrator has a pleasant voice but was wrong for most of the roles. The charater Spanish, particularly, was made to sound like an East Indian, instead of like a man from Mexico. The Texans sounded like Bostonians.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Probably not, unless it was updated to include other perspectives.

Big disappointment

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

A totally different performance. This was a much loved story, ruined by the narrator. I was happy to finally have this story available in a format that I could use, and sadly, downloaded it without listening to the preview. While I am sure that Mil Nicholson is a lovely person, her performance seemed to be a sad attempt at a caricature of a western. It would appear that either her or the director would base all of the characters other than the main one on the "whimsical sidekick" from the old black and white westerns. They all sound like Gabby Hayes. She voices Benteen Calder as a poor, female imitation of Clint Eastwood. Lorna's voice seems too high and flighty, and Spanish Bill? A Mexican? Perhaps she thought his last name was O'Malley. Her Spanish accent was remarkably Irish.

What other book might you compare This Calder Range to and why?

This is your typical bodice ripper romance, with a bit of a western flair.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

While I could listen to the narration of the story, after the initial shock of hearing a female, slightly English accent, the voice characterization was just terrible. I couldn't get past it, and was ripped from the story every time someone spoke...
