Over half a century ago, John Rowlands set out by canoe into the wilds of Canada to survey land for a timber company. After paddling alone for several days, he came upon "the lake of my boyhood dreams", which he named Cache Lake because there was stored the best that the north had to offer-timber for a cabin; fish, game, and berries to live on; and the peace and contentment he felt he could not live without.

Story
Lost on Purpose is the nonfiction adventure narrative of a former technology executive who took leave of the real world to reinvent himself as a 21st-century mountain man. In October-November 2013, Patrick Taylor crossed the Rocky Mountains alone on foot. He passed through one of the largest wilderness areas in the lower 48 to reach and retrace the route of Lewis and Clark in the winter. The sacrifices - vocationally, financially, emotionally - are measured against the benefits by the author in a refreshingly honest, humorous, and inspirational fashion.

Story
Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, home to only a handful of people, is a harsh and lonely place. So when James Campbell's cousin Heimo Korth asked him to spend a summer building a cabin in the rugged Interior, Campbell hesitated about inviting his 15-year-old daughter, Aidan, to join him. Would she be able to withstand clouds of mosquitoes, the threat of grizzlies, bathing in an ice-cold river, and hours of grueling labor peeling and hauling logs? But once there, Aidan embraced the wild.

Publisher's summary
Two boys and an old man survive a harrowing waterfall accident to find themselves stranded in the remote Mackenzie Mountains of northern Canada. Fifteen-year-olds Gabe and Raymond have the same birthday, but come from vastly different cultures. Gabe was raised by his grandparents in the Texas hill country, and Raymond is from a native village in the Northwest Territories. The old man is Johnny Raven, Raymond’s great uncle. Luckily for the boys, he’s a traditional Dihnay Indian who knows the old ways of winter survival. With winter fast approaching, and food running out, they must all work together to keep from becoming trapped in the howling wilds. Whether the group is eating porcupine or shooting the icy rapids, Johnny Heller’s voice draws maximum excitement. The author of Bearstone, and numerous other award-winning books, Will Hobbs is known for his thrill-a-minute wilderness adventure stories featuring teens.

Story
In 1930, two novice paddlers - Eric Sevareid and Walter C. Port - launched a secondhand 18-foot canvas canoe from the Minnesota River at Fort Snelling for an ambitious summer-long journey from Minneapolis to Hudson Bay. Without benefit of radio, motor or good maps, the teenagers made their way over 2,250 miles of rivers, lakes, and difficult portages.
