Publisher's summary

His father is a white trapper, his mother an Athabascan Indian who walks a thousand miles in winter to reunite with her family. Thus, Jimmy Huntington learns early how to survive on the land. Huntington is only seven when his mother dies, and he must care for his younger siblings.

A courageous and inspiring man, Huntington hunts wolves, fights bears, survives close calls too numerous to mention, and becomes a championship sled-dog racer.

Amazing life story

Really enjoyed this book! I got bog down a little bit with the first chapter or two, but the rest of the book had me fully engaged. Will definitely be listening to it again.

A fantastic story

The story is great.
Unfortunately, the reader does not know how to pronounce Alaskan geography, which in my mind, significantly takes away from the performance. It also lacks the emotion and cadence that I would expect from an Alaskan elder (having been performed in first person), but the story was phenomenal.

A wonderfully inspiration life, well lived in a place unimaginable.

To be able to follow a person of such insurmountable will as James Huntington’s is an honor and a pleasure.

Riveting slice of Alaska

Gives views of Alaska in gold rush times, early 1900s , through the 1950s. Constant is jimmy Huntington’s tireless response to this harsh environment. Very moving

A must read

A fantastic memoir. This story is told on a way that brings the reader or listener in. His story is inspiring and shows what can be achieved when determination is foremost. His story is honest and upfront. He lived in a quiet place. miles away from busy streets, not so long ago… but he knew who he was and he made a difference to so many. A very special man.

Fantastic Listen

I listen to many audio books. Some put me to sleep, some fill an empty void, and some get me so immersed that I find myself looking for places I can listen without interruptions. This is the later. Take a trip to Alaska and loose yourself in the moment and you follow the life of Jimmy Huntington. I have few books I listen to twice. This will be one.

Tall tales in the arctic.

The first 1/3rd this book was great. The story about Jimmy’s mother and about his childhood learning to be a trapper had me hooked.

Sadly, the rest of the book dragged on. It seemed like it was written by a different person. I grew to dislike Jimmy by the end of the story. He brags about cheating on his wife and each story seems more exaggerated then the one before it.

Perhaps he was a great man; I can definitely respect him for all the hardships he endured but that alone isn’t enough to save this book
