Publisher's Summary

Winner of the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association Book Award, Indian Creek Chronicles is Pete Fromm's account of seven winter months spent alone in a tent in Idaho guarding salmon eggs and coming face to face with the blunt realities of life as a contemporary mountain man. A gripping story of adventure and a modern-day Walden, this contemporary classic established Fromm as one of the West's premier voices.

A good adventure

I liked the story very much. A nice mix of humor and adventure. The young spirit of a young man in the adventure of a lifetime that is at the beginning of his lifetime really.

Really interesting story about ID/MT backcountry

Got this book to keep me company on a long road trip, and I really enjoyed hearing about the familiar places in ID and MT. He was so honest about his lack of experience and all of the things he had to learn while he was out there. Really a fun listen! Would have loved to hear more about his dog during the story, but otherwise it was excellent.

Better READ the book

The story was interesting. However the narrator was terrible. His inflection and cadence was awkward. It would have been more interesting had the narrator “told” the story as if it were his own rather than simple read the words on the page.
It was as if he was reading a textbook.
As for the story, I commend the author for taking on such a job with zero experience. I would have liked to have had more development in his preparation for the 7 month adventure, how he prepared, where he got his information to be so well prepared and the experience of the preparation. I would also like more details about the relationship with his dog. As she was the only other living being he spent the majority of his time with. I would think there would have been a more significant bond there.
More visual, emotional descriptions of his experience would make, what undoubtedly was a significant, life changing event, more palpable for the readers.

Great book!

Pete Fromm has written a wonderful memoir about his time in the Selway in Idaho. He spent a winter there alone in a tent watching over the salmon eggs that were put in the river to grow and make their way west to the Pacific Ocean. He truly learned to be a “mountain man” after living there for 7 months and having to take care of himself. He learned some lessons the hard way, but he learned them and never forgot. It is an interesting book that I recommend to any outdoor types!

Worthwhile but just average!

This is an enjoyable listen but nothing especially compelling or memorable as a whole. MMB

Good story that keeps a nice pace

I was interested in the story, and listened as I drove up the Clear Water river to Missoula. I was not too stoked on the ending but very relevant and telling.
