Publisher's Summary

Ethan Wate used to think of Gatlin, the small Southern town he had always called home, as a place where nothing ever changed. Then he met mysterious newcomer Lena Duchannes, who revealed a secret world that had been hidden in plain sight all along. A Gatlin that harbored ancient secrets beneath its moss-covered oaks and cracked sidewalks. A Gatlin where a curse has marked Lena's family of powerful Supernaturals for generations. A Gatlin where impossible, magical, life-altering events happen.

Sometimes life-ending.

Together they can face anything Gatlin throws at them, but after suffering a tragic loss, Lena starts to pull away, keeping secrets that test their relationship. And now that Ethan's eyes have been opened to the darker side of Gatlin, there's no going back. Haunted by strange visions only he can see, Ethan is pulled deeper into his town's tangled history and finds himself caught up in the dangerous network of underground passageways endlessly crisscrossing the South, where nothing is as it seems.

"Not as good as the first story"
Would you try another book from Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl and/or Kevin T. Collins?

I have tried several audiobooks by the the two authors. I find their series entertaining, and they have some really interesting characters.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

There were no big surprises connected to the ending, but it did trigger my interest enough to want to listen to the next audiobook in the series.

What about Kevin T. Collins’s performance did you like?

The narrator does an excellent job portraying the different characters.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

I probably would, but I doubt that there will ever be a movie based on this book.

    Any additional comments?

The story is entertaining, but not as engaging as the story in book 1.

"A Captivating Journey to the "Great Barrier""
Would you listen to Beautiful Darkness again? Why?

Yes, probably a few years from now. I do not like to listen to books over and over because it takes away the magic of them for me.

What other book might you compare Beautiful Darkness to and why?

The relationship between Lena and Ethan is somewhat of a resemblance to Diana Bishop & Matthew Clairmont of "Discovery of Witches." The plot as well had the same detail-oriented quality of sucking me into a roller coaster ride of "WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN NEXT???" Plus, the Castor World/ Incubus World resembled the vampire and demon world in "Discovery of Witches." There was a lot of archaic knowledge between both of them. Similar qualities but two totally different stories!

What about Kevin T. Collins’s performance did you like?

Kevin T. Collins was amazing at bringing this book to life! He definitely used inflections and accents to his advantage. You could tell that he wanted to make sure every person in the book had a presence. He made the characters relatable where you could not help but fall in love with them and laugh when they did things that were characteristic of their nature. The way he narrated the story...it just flowed so well and his southern accent was pretty good. His English accent always made me smile. I really liked Liv in the book!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

YES! There is no Earthly way that I could have... seeing that it is almost 16 hours long, but I could not wait to find out what was going to happen next. I was like "Hurry, hurry!! I have to know!"

    Any additional comments?

Make sure you read "Beautiful Creatures" before, but this series will not disappoint! Kami Garcia & Margaret did an amazing job crafting this gorgeous story together. I could understand why seeing that they are a reading specialist or specialized in creative writing. I will say that the book is very different from the movie in many ways. Many "Beautiful Creatures" fans were so disappointed that the director did not stick to the story or decided to cut important characters from the story line. I think the casting director did a phenomenal job casting who they did for the roles! I integrated those people into my visualization of the characters and it just made sense!

Yes I love Kevin T. Collins' voice.

Who was your favorite character and why?

It is hard to pick just one, but I have to say Link is the funniest man alive.

"The best book of the four"
What made the experience of listening to Beautiful Darkness the most enjoyable?

This was the book of the series in which the most happened. It was fun to listen to and see how the characters evolved and grew. It was the best plot.

What about Kevin T. Collins’s performance did you like?

His voice. I could just listen to that voice with that accent all day long. It made me feel he was sitting next to me in the car and telling me the story.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Yes.

"had to follow up on the series"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I felt it was, I had previously read/listened to Beautiful Creatures and was hooked. I felt that I needed to see where the characters went from the end of BC.

Which character – as performed by Kevin T. Collins – was your favorite?

Macon was my favorite. His cadence and drawl were dead on for what I expected when reading book 1.

    "Try the Sample"
Is there anything you would change about this book?

It was very slow going and didn't pick up until about halfway through. It took a couple tries for me to get into it. I couldn't get past the slow beginning until I got the audiobook so I could listen to it while driving. Then I alternated between reading and listening.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

The narrator did a good job giving each charter their own voice. Some of the accents grated on my nerves. My biggest complaint is that he read so slow. It helped when I increased the speed to 1.5, but the reading still didn't sound fluid.

    Any additional comments?

Try the sample before buying so you can check if you can tolerate the narration.

"Good, book 1 was a little better"

This is the one where Edward breaks up with Bella and runs off. Kidding, but it definately gives you that feeling. This is a good story, lots of fun fantasy. You will definately want to read it if you read the first one!

Who was your favorite character and why?

What does Kevin T. Collins bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Bring home the fact that Ethan (a boy) is our lead and he has the accenct to make you know he has been raised as a southern gentalman
