Publisher's summary

Fourteen-year-old Augum and friends Bridget and Leera dream of becoming warlocks. But with a kingdom in total chaos, it will take courage, sacrifice, and an iron will to make that dream come true. The lord of the legion, a vicious tyrant, has overthrown the king in a relentless and murderous quest for seven mythic artifacts - and Augum's mentor, the legendary Anna Atticus Stone, possesses one. While Augum struggles with demons from a painful childhood, a betrayal puts him, his friends, and his mentor through a harrowing ordeal that threatens to destroy them all... and change the course of history.

Arcane, the debut novel in the fantasy adventure series the Arinthian Line, follows three friends as they navigate an ancient, abandoned castle, endure grueling training, challenge old mysteries, and learn that a bond forged in tragedy might just be the only thing to save them from a ruthless enemy.

Amazing story

I really loved this story. It was captivating, fun, and adventurous. I really liked the heroes and really hated the villains which to me sets the story up for some really great possible twists.

Young Adult Fantasy Perfection

The plot and deeply emotionally connected characters really suck you in in this coming of age tale of a peasant boy (Augum) turned warlock apprentice. Journey with the fantastic 14-16 year old children and the adults around them as they learn the Arcane arts while their kingdom is turned upside down by a maniacal necromancer. The narrator brings the characters to life and really gives personality to each of the characters during dialog. This book does have some child abuse, graphic violence, and adult lewd dialog, but does not include cheesy intense romance, romantic themes, or sex scenes.

Wonderful

I started this audiobook without any expectations, and I must say that it won me over. I enjoyed every second of it!

Very well written but depressing!

The writing is excellent in this novel and that is the only reason I finished it. I found the book extremely depressing and would experience a negative mood while listening to it. it was very intense.

Appropriate and entertaining YA fantasy.

The narrator was fabulous. I could listen to him all day. He may have made the book better than it is, which is rare, but I will have to listen a second time to make sure. This book is more a 4.3 star book. But I believe it was starting to get exciting at the end. For that reason and my inclination to want the second book didn’t want to give it 4 stars so it received my 5. I love books that I can listen to without having to worry about language or sexual scenes. Especially, while I cook dinner or have it on in the background while in my office. I have noticed over the past few years there is a polarity for those who prefer vulgarity and graphic sex in books and those of us that do not. I prefer clean listens, when it comes to language and sex. I don’t need all those details or bad language to show intensity hints are fine- no need to dive right in. This was appropriate and interesting enough. Somewhat standard in scenario. But that doesn’t bother me with this narrator at all.

An Entertaining Start

I look forward to continuing this story. The plot was a bit straight forward, with some cheese moments scattered throughout. However, the performance conveyed believable comradre among 3 dimensional characters. plus the willingness to kill people off keeps you wondering what will happen next not unlike the Song if Fire and Ice books. All of that makes for a good start to what I hope will be a riveting series!

Great beginning to what I believe will be a great series.

The story is great and well narrated. I can’t wait to see where adventures take the three and the skills and powers that they will develop. Great beginning to what I hope to be a great series.

Slow start but keep going!

I thought it was a little slow to start, but I'm glad I stuck with it. The narrator takes some getting used to, but after a while he's ok. I'm off to start the next one now.
