Publisher's Summary

War is coming!

The government has accelerated their super soldier program. Their new Virtual Reality system is the perfect tool to train soldiers for the coming war. There is a shortage of enlisted men and women that possess the "talent". Everyone from athletes to professional gamers must be sorted and vetted. Humanity is on the line.

Lucius is one of those lucky few selected to participate in Codename: Freedom, a new game that promises to push Virtual Reality to the ultimate level. Unknown to him, the Game Developers have no time to waste. With the pain dampeners turned off and an army ready to attack the new players as they enter Codename: Freedom, he will have to ask himself an unexpected question. Is his dream worth suffering for? Will he quit, go mad, or find the motivation to fight when it becomes painfully clear that this is far from just another game?

Great LitRPG Book

I loved the book. I found the unique game mechanics the writer used for the world interesting and I want to see where he goes with them. The characters have more depth than a lot of hack and slash LitRPG books our there. The protagonist had a nice realistic feel with him not being some overpowered player that would always just get what he wants. I eagerly await the next book.

Combat Heavy

Things I do not like: The way the voice actor shouts, the hormonal nature of the main protagonist, and how Victoria always seems to be clinging to the MC all the time. Most pauses in between sentences are out of place. The narrator probably does it for dramatic effect but without the proper emotion and leading required it sounds uncomfortable and unnatural, taking away from the book.

Things I like : Character progression, intense combat, and the show of growth in character and motivations over time. There is a great show or how the MC's motivations and fears grow and battle one another leading to a believable and proper show of character progression.

This is one of my favorite LITRPG novels now.

Took a chance and I rolled a 20. I didn't expect this one to be good but I was diffidently entertained from beginning to end. The struggles of an aspiring gaming saleb adds an interesting twist to the plot. Just give it a shot if you are into the genre you won't be sorry.

wow

I love the lit rpg genre but I was thinking I was getting too familiar with it's tropes and couldn't be surprised... this book showed me the genre still has a few in it for me. This new twist as far as connecting the real bodies of the players to their avatar adds a sense of danger not always there in a genre where main characters can die then just come back. I listened to this in one sitting and loved every minute of it. That can't be said with many other books. Five stars without hesitation and am looking forward to book two.

Great book.

I loved this book. It was a different take on litrpg. It's not overly full of stats and is full of action. My one gripe is the amount of time the MC spends wining about pain.

The narrator was excellent. I would recommend this one to readers who aren't all that into litrpg also as it's an excellent sci-fi action book in its own right.

I have nothing negative to say

I liked it and cannot think of a single bad thing go say about the book. So I recommend it as an engrossing listen. The gravity given to pain is a bit wierd. Most books dont give actual death the same weight and gravity that this book gives transient physical pain. But then again torture is often treated as a crime well above execution. So it makes logical sense. It just feels really wierd. Pain is usually treated as a complete non issue if there is no associated long term injury. So its wierd and different.

As stellar as I imagined

Exactly how I heard and pictured it in my mind as I read the book. McLeod Andrews did a stellar job bringing the book to life and making everyone believeable. As I was listening to it I could feel myself swinging the sword, I could feel the thump of me feet on the ground. This has quickly become one of my top 5 audiobooks.

I will highly recommend this to anyone looking for a thrillseeking, heart pounding adventure.

One of the best litrpg series

I own almost 500 audio titles and this series is one of the best I have listened to. It pulled me in and I have listened all three books in a week. I am sad the journey is over for now and I eagerly await his next book.

Finally main characters that feel real!

I saw someone mention this book so I thought I'd give it a shot. I've read his other series and thought they were good, but they were a causal read and were fun. then I started this book and all I can say is WOW!! honestly the world develops perfectly, the story has so much potential and the characters feel real! everyone has a personality that buy the end of the book is well developed, people act in ways that make since and dont do random stuff that doesn't match their personalities for the story. honestly this might of just became a new favorite book!:)

best lit rpg out here!

Book is unlike the vast majority of litrpgs the MC isn't over powered and the story isn't the standard 1 person vs world. It contains a great balance of fighting, stats and humour. The best book in the genre! Bring on book 2!
