How can you lie when you can't remember the truth?

When 17-year-old Hunter Gifford wakes up in the hospital on the night of homecoming, he’s shocked to learn he and his girlfriend, Chloe Summers, have been in a terrible car accident. Hunter has no memory of the crash, and his shock turns to horror when he is told Chloe’s blood has been found in the car, but she has disappeared.

Back at school, his fellow students taunt him, and his former best friend starts making a true-crime documentary about the case—one that points the finger directly at Hunter. And just when things can’t get any worse, Chloe’s mother stands in front of the entire town at a candlelight vigil and accuses Hunter of murder.

Under mounting pressure from the police, Hunter takes matters into his own hands by questioning anyone who might know the truth and posting videos to prove his innocence. When Hunter learns he and Chloe were seen arguing loudly outside the dance, he faces a sickening possibility: Was he angry enough to kill the person he loved?

The author is from my home state

This book is pretty good and I didn’t see the ending coming but it didn’t feel like a good murder mystery. It feels like it needed more anxiety building situations. More things to make you uncomfortable and scared. It just felt … dull.

Nice Quick Read

Could have had a more shocking twist, but still a great suspenseful mystery. It serves up little pieces of information slowly but surely, but leaves a rather predictable outcome through too much foreshadowing. I enjoyed the characters and environment though, dives into how a person could really feel in a situation like that.

Great story

My first book by David Bell and I enjoyed it so much. The mystery and suspense keeps you turning the pages until the very last one. The performance by Eddie Lopez brought the story to life.

Better story than narration

David Bell is a solid 3 star writer for me. I enjoyed his first YA mystery more than most of his adult novels.

The family relationships between Hunter, Olivia and their dad, still grieving the loss of wife and mother appeared authentic. In fact, all the characters seemed like actual people rather than one dimensional characters imagined in a writer’s mind. Some of the teen dialog didn’t feel like words kids would say, like a World War II metaphor.

Hunter having memory loss from a concussion the night of the the accident and Chloe’s disappearance was a good setup for questioning the reliability of his narration and why he appeared guilty to the cops.

I guessed the bad guy(s) as soon as they were introduced but that didn’t interfere with my enjoyment of the story.

Enjoyable YA Quick Listen

This was an easy and enjoyable quick listen. The narration was well done. My first book by this author and I would probably read/listen to another.

I didn’t like it much

Not so good! It was part of my book club. It’s a younger book. It reminded me of a lifetime movie.

Why did the ending have my crying?

This author did a great job of making me get attached to the characters. I was constantly trying to piece together what happened to Chloe right along with hunter. The narration was just perfect too! This is a great twisty story and I love it!

Ending is unclear

The reader did a great job performing the different characters. There were many times I would take the long way home to keep listening to hear what would happen next. However, the Why of the person who did what they did was not explained well. And that is the author’s fail. So, this will be my last book of his.

Hate I wasted a credit

Hate I wasted a credit on this book. Very slow and drawn out… then the end was so odd.
