Story
1898, East Africa. The Tsavo man-eaters kill 130 people over the course of nine months. The unusually large, pale-coloured, and maneless male lions mark history in what became known as their reign of terror. Now, history is repeating itself. A new pride of killers has arrived in Tsavo, staking out their own bloody legacy. One that includes the murdered wife of conservationist and former hunter Thomas Walker.

Story
On a desolate beach in far northern Scotland, the winter storms have been washing up all manner of things since time began. But buried in the centre of one smaller iceberg is a shard of ancient Viking pottery telling a partial tale of a hidden mysterious island beyond the ice and mist, that was home to a great treasure and even greater horrors. Thawing in the same block of ice was a rotting flap of skin that refused to be identified but had similar skin patterns to a creature not seen for 100 million years.

Story
It had been a rough five years for Memphis Police Officer Jake Jessup. Blaming himself for the death of two partners, a divorce, and almost losing his job, the three-day canoe and kayak trip in the Ozarks sounded like the perfect way to reconnect with family and friends, and to put old demons to rest. What he found instead were a new set of demons, only these were real...and deadly. A float turns tragic for a group of boaters when a secret military project escapes into the Ozark Mountains of West Arkansas.

Story
A missing child draws Deputy Daniel Clark into a bizarre investigation that leaves him questioning what he just witnessed. Trained to trust his instincts and to pay close attention to detail, his rational brain is at war with what he has seen. Something very strange is happening in rural Sloan County, Missouri. Nothing in his experience has prepared him for anything like this. More disappearances only make the mystery deepen as the Sheriff tries to cover up what’s really going on. Clark enlists the aid of other deputies who, like himself, have seen things that don’t make sense.

Publisher's summary
We just lost our place at the top of the food chain. Man is just meat.
It is only when the bones of its prey are discovered in a remote Scottish glen that the majesty and power of one of nature’s most successful predators is truly revealed. As it strikes silently from the shadows and on nights shrouded in darkness, a small village falls under siege to a remarkable creature. For thousands of years mankind has had the upper hand but now - suddenly, violently, bloodily - the balance of power has shifted.
When an isolated wildlife research centre launches an investigation, it is soon discovered that something out of place has made the Highlands its home and set its sights on the quiet village of Cannich. It will hunt, it will kill, and it won’t let anything get in its way. Thomas Walker, a renowned wildlife specialist and former big game hunter, finds himself confronted with his past and an animal the likes of which he had never wanted to face again. As its devastating rampage goes unchecked and threatens his home, the woman he loves and his very way of life, an older and much more human adversary seeks him out. How long will any of them survive the presence of the beast in their shadow?
There are nearly 2,000 reported sightings of what have become known as mystery big cats across the UK every year. Some, such as the beasts of Bodmin and Dartmoor, have become infamous. Their origin and identity remain unknown. Shadow Beast, the new chiller from Luke Phillips, offers a terrifying and deadly explanation.

So-so
I was expecting more but what I got wasn’t that bad. I will look up this author and see what else he has penned.
It seemed to end too soon. I like longer novels and don’t see how this one passed the temporal test. Non the less it had a little something that kept me interested , this the 4 star rating.

Interesting how story was told from beast perspective as well as the main human characters. Didn’t really need the story line of historic conflict between two male characters.

Just a good creature horror book
The characters are good and enjoyable, the monster is horrifying, the chase is energetic and thrilling... it's just simply a good book, no bones about it.
I will say I didn't love a certain plot development near the end, because it happens in almost every creature horror book and it's just silly and irritating. Still, the overall experience and story was good in spite of that. A+.

Fun monster book
In Scotland's remote reaches, a creature is on the loose, one that may be part of the Highland legend of big wild cats on the moors, or something entirely different. Great premise to the book -- the narrator did a great job narrating both the human characters and the creature (who doesn't talk, don't worry). I just wish there had been a bit more explanation as to the cat's origins. Other than that, it chugged along like any good monster book, with lots of gore and a very slow build-up to the reveal of the creature's actual appearance. I would read more by this author!

Simple but entertaining
It was an OK listen for a daily deal. But it didn’t really grip me as the writing was a bit shallow. Also, I don’t know if it was the writing or the narrator’s interpretation, but there was humor during inappropriate sections.
