Publisher's summary

L. E. Modesitt, Jr.'s best-selling fantasy novels set in the world of Recluce are among the most popular in contemporary fantasy. Rich in detail, Modesitt's Recluce books are a feast of wonderous marvels.

The White Order is the story of Cerryl, a boy orphaned when the powerful white mages killed his father to protect their control of the world's magic. Cerryl, raised by his aunt and uncle, is a curious boy, attracted to mirrors and books, though he is unable to read. When he is old enough, Cerryl is apprenticed to the local miller. The miller's daughter teaches Cerryl to read his father's books, and it seems that the talent for magic has been passed from father to son. When Cerryl witnesses a white mage destroy a renegade magician, the miller realizes the boy will not be safe there, so Cerryl must be sent to the city of Fairhaven to find his destiny.

not a bad read

all the author is no grrr tolkien, his world is interesting. his characters are good. it was full of magic, skullduggery, and all the good things like that. I enjoyed the character and felt sympathy for them it was happy that they made out.

Excellent entry in the series.

One of my favorite Recluce stories; shows a refreshing perspective (from the White side.). Good performance and solid story. You will like this one.

turning point in the series

If you are reading the series in the order published up to this point the "white mages" have all been the mustache twirling villains of the saga. This book turns that on its head and tells its story from the perspective of a white mage during the same time as the Magical Engineer was set. It shows the white mages are just humans not monsters. Some are good, some are bad. The world building is the real sell in the Recluse series and this book is one of the pillars of that world building.
