Publisher's Summary

Long ago, the world of the Four Lands was torn apart by the wars of ancient Evil. But in the Vale, the half-human, half-elfin Shea Ohmsford now lives in peace - until the mysterious, forbidding figure of the druid Allanon appears, to reveal that the supposedly long-dead Warlock Lord lives again.

Shea must embark upon the elemental quest to find the only weapon powerful enough to keep the creatures of darkness at bay: the fabled Sword of Shannara.

The Sword of Shannara is the first volume of the classic series that has become one of the most popular fantasy tales of all time. A masterful work from a master storyteller.

©1977 Terry Brooks (P)2003 Books on Tape, Inc.

"A Lord of the Rings clone."

I struggled to finish this audio book. The story copies far too many elements from Lord of the Rings. The narration is over exaggerated and very hard work to keep listening too. This has put me off trying the rest of the series.

    "Long-winded ripoff"
If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

People who like unnecessarily long descriptions of everything.

What could Terry Brooks have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Stop describing every little thing in superflous detail, and not reskin LOTR.

Did Scott Brick do a good job differentiating each of the characters? How?

No. The only main character who there isn't essentially two of is the druid.

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    The audio narrator was okay.

    Any additional comments?

Literally the worst book I've ever read.

and wondered what it would be like now.
A slightly predictable plot but a great romp though a Tolkien like world. Good character development and concepts.

... but never read. Great story, lots of depth to the characters. Pity you don't find out what happened to the rock troll. Looking forward to the second one.

    "LOTR rip off"

This is my first review but I felt compelled to give feedback. I almost exclusively only listen to and read this genre but this story was awful. Poor telling and poor content and far too many similarities to LOTR.

The premise and concept however is amazing it is just a shame it was delivered so poorly by the author. I will listen to the next two books in this trilogy as unfortunately I have already purchased them!
