Publisher's summary

Miles Cameron is the master of intrigue and action-packed battles in this epic tale of magic and mercenaries, war, depravity, and politics, the final book of the Traitor Son Cycle.

In the climax of the Traitor Son Cycle, the allied armies of the Wild and the Kingdoms of men and women must face Ash for control of the gates to the hermetical universe, and for control of their own destinies. But exhaustion, treachery and time may all prove deadlier enemies.

In Alba, Queen Desiderata struggles to rebuild her kingdom wrecked by a year of civil war, even as the Autumn battles are fought in the west. In the Terra Antica, The Red Knight attempts to force his unwilling allies to finish the Necromancer instead of each other. But as the last battle nears, The Red Knight makes a horrifying discovery...all of this fighting may have happened before.

A poor end to an epic story

Listening to this last book was very difficult because I loved the story up to this point but I can’t . I didn’t like the end that seemed poorly thought out and rushed to wrap up. I did not like the way characters who we spend entire books getting to know are off’d in a meaningless battle. It seemed several of the build ups to this book are let downs . The most memorable character Willful murder is spoken of several times and to me it seemed because the other characters were lacking personality in this book. Finally the ending is just not satisfying. I was prepared for a sad ending , a happy ending or even something in between but it really didn’t have any closure to it . There was so much potential with this story to end well and I wish it would have.

The journey is finally, thankfully over.

The amount of listening seemed to be more than what transpired. It was well written but... too much time was spent on battle descriptions and not enough on character interaction. I was getting tired of the monotony of it all... like the endless ringing out of sabatons clanging on an endless, cobble-stoned road.

Another great book in this series.

Really enjoyed this series, almost disappointed that it's over. Highly recommended. Looking forward to other books by this author.

Little of this

Overall Cameron is a great writer, I've read all of his books and this series is my favorite (also the first I read)

-1 star for being an obnoxious feminist though, as usual, its particularly gross in a man

Meh ending to a solid concept

This just felt rushed and didn't fill in a lot of the loose ends.

Just like most of the series, I felt like I only knew half of what was going on. I could have definitely used a dim-whit character to every now and then say, "what just happen" or "why are we doing it this way." Perhaps if I was not working while listening or had read the book, I would feel differently.

The story just ends, then there's a 5 minute epilogue that ties up nothing ... Just, we defeated the bad guy and road off into the sunset. No more information about the gates. Why did Ash turn bad? Can we trust the other dragons? Maybe I missed something but I'm an avid audiobook listener and this one was a tough pill to swallow.

Medieval knights and traditions in an alternate reality was pretty fun if you like historical fiction. Cameron had a story he wanted to tell, just wish he would have slowed down a bit and dumbed it down every now and then. It was hard to digest in parts. I'm still glad I took a chance on this series but don't know if I'll ever go back for another listen.

Poor Narration

Neither narrator for the series was particularly competent; I can’t stay focused on the story when I’m repeatedly taken out by mispronunciations. When your career is narration, it’s odd that you can’t be bothered to google the pronunciation of an unfamiliar word.

Now, that’s not to say the writing is particularly well done, but I would have been better able to suspend disbelief had I not been subjected to the poor performances throughout the series.

I preferred the first reader

Wonderful story, but Mr Dickson cannot seem to keep his pronunciations consistent across books or even chapters. His character voices leave a LOT to be desired, as well. Peter Kenny would absolutely have been a better choice, if they HAD to change after book 2. Kept listening because the story is great. Cameron does have this weirdly irritating habit of using the same word twice in rapid succession (I've read other works of his), but that doesn't detract from the tale. I MIGHT have cried a little at the end.

Simply, spectacular story telling. I recommend this to any who live history and fantasy. I can’t wait for more stories in this saga.

Best last book ever

Just a fantastic story. It's always a bitter sweat thing to end a series of books but this one hit it out of the park. Thank you for the ride.
