Publisher's Summary

After the end of the Enterprise™'s five-year mission, Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, and Dr. McCoy struggle to establish new lives apart from one another and the starship. The newly promoted Admiral Kirk is placed in charge of a specially created Starfleet division and attempts to defuse a critical hostage situation; Mr. Spock, who, in the midst of a teaching assignment on Vulcan, finds the one thing he least expected; and Dr. McCoy, whose unerring instinct for trouble lands him smack in the middle of an incident that could trigger an interstellar bloodbath.

    "Unexpected"

I think this is the story prior to one of the Star Trek movies. I didn't expect that it will sustain my interest up to the end of the story. The plot is simple, but interesting.

I want to listen to more Star Trek books by Dillard. I also like Nimoy and Doohan's narrations.

    "sound effects and music unnecessary"

I bought this book 30 years ago and could not get through it. I was very excited I found the audible version of it and it was narrated by"Scotty" himself. But the sound effects and music were very distracting.

Very good story. Melded older Vulcan things with modern. Good story on a person sacrificing lives for others. Mr. Spock was very mature to give credit to Dr Llewelyn for her sacrifice. Nice narration by Mr. Scott. He sounded also like the fine narration in the Star Trek cartoon.

    "A blast from the past"

The Star Trek Audio books with the original cast always takes one back into the past to simpler times. JM Dillard tells a excellent Lost Tale from between the final five year missing and the first motion picture. James Doohan and Leonard Nimoy readings always help to bring the story to you and feel like a missing episode. LLAP

"Storyline did not sync well with the canon."

The rendition of the main characters was poor and there is no mention of this in future Star Trek events.

    "Must read for every trekkie/trekker"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This book fills in the time between the end of the series and the premier of the first motion picture so it answers many questions.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Star Trek X: The Lost Years (Adapted)?

How intensely Spock relied on Kirk

What does Leonard Nimoy bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

    An authoritative view

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    yes

    Any additional comments?

    Highly recommend this book.

    "James Doohan is the best!"

I have to say, James Doohan's narration is just supreme! I sort of kept forgetting it was him due to the magnificent voice talent! He really sounded like the characters protrayed! The book is worth a listen just because of him!
As for the rest of the book, the story is fantastic! Really gets the core of the characters and it really feels like what would have happen if this was an episode or a movie! The villian was weak, perhaps because this is an "adapted" version?
Sound effects were a bit loud at times but usually the sound effects and music were great!

    Story
"an amusing diversion, but not a quality one"

tarot meets vulcan history in a tale that has more in common with Harry potter than star trek. be warned that the nimoy parts are short clumsy bolt-ons added presumably for the sellability of the nimoy name alone.

but if you need a star trek fix and aren't fussy this'll do.

    "Adapted does not mean abridged!!"

I read this book many years ago and it became a firm favourite of mine. This audio version does not do it justice. It has been cut to pieces. There was meant to be chapters about Kirk settling in as Admiral, Spock meant a girl and became engaged, Riley had his own story too. All cut for no good reason. Disappointing
