Sequel to Star Trek 4

This story tries to follow up on the mysterious probe from Star Trek 4 the voyage home. It gives a mission and background for the probe while weaving a possible peace talk between the romulans and federation
James Doohan does a fair job narrating and the special effects were good but unnecessary at points.
My only complaint is the end is a little underwhelming but good to end the romulan plot but the probe portion could have been better.

Romulan based story, barely touches on Probe

I had previously read the physical book & that had a bit more about the Probe & its origins than this audio book, but even so it seems to have barely scratched the surface. The story focuses most on a pair of Romulan siblings, their unhappy lives, & their wish to defect to the federation. I find this extremely frustrating as it's definitely not what I was hoping for. I was hoping with this being an abridged version, they would edit to be heavier on the Probe storyline & on the crew, light on the Romulan character drama. However, it seems they chopped equally from all parts, much to my dismay.

The Probe & its search for whales is one of the most fascinating storylines EVER, not just in Trek! I have been a fan of the Probe since I first saw STAR trek 4 in the theatre when I was 5 in 1986. Trek + WHALES = pure heaven for me!!
The author's ideas about the Probe's origins are so creative. I was blown away! She seems to really know the crew & does a great job with them.

Unfortunately, the good bits feel few & far between, not to mention completely bogged down by uninteresting storylines of melancholy characters.
Seems like the author had a phenomenal short story about the Probe & a novella about 2 siblings in the USSR (that she pasted with a Romulan facade) & combined them into one novel. I also feel that the ending was weak & disappointing. I really appreciate this author's other books, so I was really shocked by how little I enjoyed this potentially amazing book!!

James Doohan does a terrific narration, of course. It's a little distracting to hear Scottie speaking, but without his accent! Anything can be a distraction when you find yourself slogging through mundane details about a piano recital. No joke!

Feels like Trek

By far one of my favorite titles since I can remember. The story, concidering the challenges this particular title had, feels very classic Trek. James Doohan's performance is one of my favorites. Romulans as the antagonists are always fun. The secondary characters are as important to the overall story as your expected stars. Very enjoyable.

Adaptation is the key word here

I actually read the novel Probe years before and remembered enjoying it. James Doohan is someone I heard and enjoyed in audio books before. I missed however the word Adapted which means certain sections of the original novel have been removed. This is very much an abridged novel and it shows in some places.

James Doohan did a good job reading the novel. The voice acting and production qualities are very good. I don't regret my purchase and I think this is a good version of the novel. Overall I do recommend this as a breezy and fun Star Trek novel.

Enjoyable

Enjoyed this production, if not corny at times. Good entertainment. I certainly liked the connection with my favorite StarTrek movie of all time.

Star Trek Probe is an excellent read

I am glad that I read Star Trek. Ever since I saw Star Trek 4 the Voyage Home I always wanted to know more about the Probe. This answered a lot of my questions. I recommend this book to any Star Trek fan.

an interesting Star trek novel.

With this novel don't expect to learn more about the probe it just goes into other information about it and it goes into a bit of redundant information about the major characters as well. The narrator we did very well though.

A great trek!

Would you consider the audio edition of Star Trek: Probe (Adapted) to be better than the print version?

The story was surprisingly good, added to the story from the fourth movie, and Doohan's reading was great!

Who was your favorite character and why?

It makes me want to go back and watch the movie it was based on again.
