Publisher's Summary

Titan was one of the nation's most loved and respected Heroes, until an infidelity scandal tore his image and family apart. After decades spent out of the limelight, Owen Daniels has decided to take up the mantle of Titan once again to try and make amends for his years away. Unfortunately, the Titan Scandal is still common knowledge, and no Hero team wants such a polarizing figure.

With no other options, Owen is forced to take a job overseeing a group of corpies, corporate-sponsored Supers who do rescue work...as long as there are cameras around. Between a team that doesn't want him, fellow Heroes who don't trust him, and a nation that might not be ready to forgive the sins of the past, the return of Titan could prove even harder than the scandal that drove him away. But Owen will have to push on, because his new city is far from a peaceful one.

A mysterious enemy is attacking Heroes and growing steadily stronger. An enemy that only the once-legendary Titan might be able to stop. If he can manage to stick around this time.

"Doesn't spoil upcoming Super Powered books!"

I was both eagerly anticipating and dreading Corpies release. If you've finished Year One have no fear, the spoilers in Corpies are very, very minor. Time-wise it seems to take place during Super Powereds Year Three, but it avoids all but two very minor spoilers, one of which is painfully obvious and the other very easily missed.

The book is great. It does a lot of great world building, giving a wealth of information about the world of Super Powereds and how it works. The story itself is as original a super hero story as I've ever read. It really deserves a place along side Watchmen (graphic novel, not the dreadful movie). I'm not sure if Drew is planning to continue the story of Titan and/or the corpies, but I'd read it in a second.

    "Titan is my Hero"

Titan is my hero and I'm grateful to the author for this volume. Without pandering or resorting to depressing tropes, Mr. Hayes has delivered, in my opinion, his best work yet in the Super-Powereds setting. If you haven't listened to SP Years 1 and 2, I recommend you do so before starting this volume. It's a stand-alone piece, but you'll enjoy it more that way. You can listen to Corpies confidently without fear of spoilers of SP Year 3.

I hope that we'll see more of Titan and the others in this volume in the future, but I also hope that the author will continue to explore tangents leading off the Super-Powereds line. They lead to amazing places.

You should listen to this book.

    "Wow, loved it!"

I've read the two Super Powered books, and enjoyed them--they seem almost written for use as Audible titles. For the first time I realized that audio books may be driving certain areas of literature. I like long books with great characters and clever, innovative, worlds.

This one starts on an awkward premise, but it never becomes uncomfortable. I don't like sex mixed into my action/adventure/fantasy/sci-fi novels, and this book doesn't cross the line. It maintains the issue as a personal challenge the main character deals with--and like so much of the story, shows how character and determination are what makes a person awesome, and that sexuality is just a part of a very complex person. It isn't about this--but it is addressed.

I came away having really enjoyed the book and having great respect for the author as he dealt with real world issues in a very fictional--yet enjoyable--world where heroes are part of the people landscape.

Highly recommend all three books--with this one as good as the other two.

    Bring on more.

    "Great read"

I really enjoyed this book. It is a great addition to the Superpowered story arc. I was emotionally drawn in to the story and even found myself cheer and cry at different parts. If you like alt universe where superheroes are really then this is one you will like. It is well thought out and answered many questions I had as it went along. I found the initial shaming instance a little far fetched but I'm looking at it through current time eyes so maybe when it was written that wasn't the case. I did appreciate that it wasn't all about that but only one component in the book. I hope the writer ties the two story arcs together at some point. All and all a rear read in my opinion

Although fiction, we need heroes that can pick themselves off the ground. In an era where public shaming has become fashionable and ruining lives commonplace, I am proud to enjoy fiction that speaks to the heart of what it is to be human.

    "Very entertaining!... But..."

The cursing actually took away from the story. If you're a follower of Super Powereds, you've grown accustomed to the language of college aged kids. However, in Corpies the characters are adult professionals. While they do curse at times, their regular language isn't constantly peppered with it.

That said, I still really enjoyed the book. The story was good and the narration was excellent.

    "More than One Level"

I'd doubt an author who undertakes writing Super Hero fiction is striving for great depth and most readers in this genre aren't expecting that either (I certainly wasn't when I picked up this book) so it was a pleasant surprise to me to finish Corpies:Super Powereds Spinoff, 1 and realize that I got a some life lessons to muse over as well as a really fun read. And, this was done with a light touch throughout the book so that it never felt preachy or condescending.

Owen Daniels (Titan) left the Super Hero scene when he was awkwardly "outed" as a gay man and you might think the life lesson subtext is just about life style tolerance. Surprisingly, that's only a small part of the narrative. Drew Hayes has actually encompassed several different examples of people learning to be true to themselves and move on past mistakes. That's all wrapped up in some genuinely engaging characters, interesting battle scenes, good world-building, and a lot of humor. I am sure one of the attractions for me was that Owen is not a kid. Doesn't matter what has happened in your life, we all have the challenge of mid-life reassessment and I could identify with him. I also have to add that I LOVED a book that was truly entertaining for a full NINETEEN hours.

Kyle McCarley does a great job with character voices and dialog. His style in reading the narrative passages is a bit "announcer-ish" which took some time to get used to, but I liked the performance quite well overall.

I haven't read the Super Powereds series, but I probably will now. I will certainly be looking for Book2 of this Spinoff series.

"Great spinoff of a strong series"

The superpowereds series is highly entertaining in its own right but suffers from comparisons to other more well established books about special schools training gifted people i.e. Harry Potter, x-men, vampire academy. Extraordinary adolescents get recruited to a special school to teach them how to use there extraordinary skills, insert outside threat, add a sprinkling of true adolescent experience, magnified for effect and you have a formula book. But taking such a broad view would lead you to miss out in the great series and most likely miss this spinoff entirely. Corpies takes elements of the superpowereds universe and a blink and you'll miss him character from the 2nd book and weaves a spectacular story full of genuine emotion and growth. When starting the book I had preconceived notions about the main character based on his reported actions in the superpowereds books and I can say unreservedly that corpies made me reassess my thoughts. Good stories should do that. If you read comic books this is not an unfamiliar plot, With many familiar beats and characters. But that isn't always bad, I feel in love with these characters and regardless of sheathed I saw titan as a superman analog or gale as a storm analog doesn't negate the fact that the woven texture of the storytelling pulled me in and held me through to the end.
I like long stories with multiple conflicts and drew Hayes knows how to satisfy in that regard. Perhaps because he is a free internet episodic writer self publishing chapters one at a time and adding bonus chapters based on contributions his books are longer than most other writers in the genre which grants a wonderfully vivid tapestry of description and action. He lands in the realm of Robert Jordan in that regard as far as I'm concerned providing great visuals particularly for the audio book reader.
As usual Kyle McCarley is the weak link in these books, being the performer on all superpowereds books so far. His natural nasal voice is difficult to disguise and though he does perform many variations to distinguish characters(a trait will Wheaton should learn) he doesn't posses the range beyond extra nasal for nerds(stereotype), extra deep for tough guys(stereotype), breathy for female, and scratchy for gruff, tuff, or old. And these books have many more than 4 characters. I understand not everyone can be Jim dale but after 3 books of Kyle I can say for certain he should be better than this. That being said I've seen what happens s when for some reason a reader is changed mid series (Rachel Morgan hollows books) and the different pronunciations of names alone was enough to make me crazy. So I'm not advocating Kyle's removal I only point out why the reduction in score for the performance category in my review.
Another great plus if drew hayes' work is that his books are all online and should you need to reference anything while listening you can go to the web and click right to the chapter you want.

"Fun, epic romp with Heros & PEERs"

Kyle's multiple voices handles well the many characters Drew develops through the storyline's well spaced breathers between epic action sequence.
Many lessons throughout, although occcassionally too wordy, especially with the repartee filled action sequences.

"Hands Up, I'm a Drew Hayes fan !!"
Would you listen to Corpies again? Why?

I bought Corpies because I listened and enjoyed the 'Super Powereds' series (and yes, that is the correct spelling :) It has a nice overlap and takes a fringe character from that series and puts him centre stage in Corpies. I will definitely re-visit the whole series in the future (so many other new books to listen to though)

What other book might you compare Corpies to, and why?

I'm struggling to give you a comparable book, so I'll throw you a curve ball.. Check out Peter Clines '14' Fantastic story and great narration by Ray Porter, you will love it

Which scene did you most enjoy?

Who doesn't love a fight with a building sized Automaton

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me chuckle at times, I'm an old misery guts, I don't do laughing :)

    Any additional comments?

Another Powereds spinoff will be greeted with pleasure

    "Second book please!"

I was recommended to the Super Powered series by one of friends a while ago. In the last few mouths I have gone through each of those, enjoying each one and thinking about listening to them again. This one was just brilliant as those. The story was beautifully written and I loved all of the characters. I hope that this gets a second book, Because I would like to hear what happens next in all of the characters lives.

    "Great Story."

Having just come off the back of book 1-3 of the HCP series I really wasn't sure I cared enough about Titan to want to read a whole book about him. Happy to be proven wrong . The universe Drew has created is well formed enough to make just about any story set in it worth reading. Suffice to say if you liked Superpowered the you will love this .

"Great Book - Yes it a spinoff"
What made the experience of listening to Corpies the most enjoyable?

Great Book - Yes it a spinoff but Titan deserves his own book. You can listen to this book without having read Super Powereds but it does contain a few minor spoilers so read the other books first. Even as a stand alone book it would hold up without being a spinoff. Great Reading and a very enjoyable book

What did you like best about this story?

Strong characters and a great narrator
