Publisher's Summary

Alex Verus has a magic shop in Camden, London, and an uncanny ability to see the future. But suddenly everyone can see Alex's future. Because the Mage's Council of Great Britain just named him a traitor and ordered his death in seven days' time, and there's no way anyone can get out of that.

Alex's friends - Luna and the other apprentices he's taken in - are tainted by association. They'll be marked for death, too, when the ruling comes into play, and Alex becomes locked in a race against time to save them. But with only seven days to work with, will he have time left over save his own skin?

"A deft, thrill-ride of an urban fantasy - a stay-up-all-night read." (Patricia Briggs on Fated)
"Harry Dresden would like Alex Verus tremendously - and be a little nervous around him. I just added Benedict Jacka to my must-read list." (Jim Butcher, author of the Dresden Files)

Now what will happen?

What made the experience of listening to Burned the most enjoyable?

This is an author who involves himself deeply in his characters. That means that the story flows well and, okay, has some unexpected twists. All in all, this is a story of survival and friendship. I adore the characters, their interaction and the way the story develops. In fact, I was hooked from the first book.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Seriously? It's a toss up between Alex and Anne. I love Alex's "dangerous coward" view of life and the curiosity of diviners. On the other hand, Anne is prepared to take serious risks to save those she cares about.

What does Gildart Jackson bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

As I haven't read any of the books, I can't comment on that bit. Narration is excellent throughout all the books. A book heard brings the characters to life in a way that merely reading a book can't.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Several but one specifically. Towards the end, Alex touches Anne's face. No more, it would include spoilers.

Good series but starting to get stuck

I've been enjoying this series but it's starting to get stuck. The entire of this book was just set up for the next one, and in both this book and the last one the hero took a long time to achieve nothing. The list of bad guys continues to grow as no-one is ever defeated which means unfortunately the same people turn up over and over again which gets boring. If the series continues like this I'll have to give it up.

What a really good series

Great series of books but I thought the final to this one was a bit flat.
Another one on the way?

Smoking' hot story - painful narration

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Yes, I have already recommended these and will continue to recommend this series by Benedict Jacka. This is the seventh in the series so far and i'd definitely recommend starting with Book 1 (Fated) as although each book is a fairly self-contained tale, there is a strong over-arching story as well that is getting more intense with each hugely enjoyable book.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Burned?

Previously the 'baddies' have attempted to persuade our hero, Alex, into joining them with varying degrees of persuasion, subtlety and threats, but largely verbally. Now, suddenly, the gloves are taken off and it there is no more veneer of playing nicely. This is not only terrifying and distressing for our hero, but I think will prove a major turning point as to what Alex now does in order to retain his independence, and stick the figurative boot into his enemies as well. Personally, I like the cliff-hangar ending and eagerly await book 8.

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Gildart Jackson?

Almost anyone! I really didn't get on with this narration at all. I only purchased the audio book as a companion to the kindle version (wanted to test to the syncing/compatibility) and was hugely disappointed with the narration style finding the voice plummy and condescending, and very much out of step with the way the characters and their situations are described. I definitely won't be buying any further of these books on audible with this narrator.

Was Burned worth the listening time?

Completely worth the reading time, but would not listen again as the narration-style set my teeth on edge. Painful listening.

Any additional comments?

Really looking forward to book 8 - in a readable format :-)

Changes of Alex Verus

This is probably the best in the series! Unexpected turn of events, great character development, really intrigued what's going to happen next between Anne and Alex.

Burned

I have liked Benedict Jacka's books ever since I bought his first one on a whim. I hadn't heard of Mr Jacka before then, but since hearing the first one I have avidly awaited each subsequent book. Gilbert Jackson the narrator gives a brilliant performance bringing Jacka's story to life. This latest book, Burned, is fast moving and gripping and leaves you wanting more. Can't wait for the next one!
