Publisher's summary

A comet the color of blood and flame cuts across the sky. And from the ancient citadel of Dragonstone to the forbidding shores of Winterfell, chaos reigns. Six factions struggle for control of a divided land and the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms, preparing to stake their claims through tempest, turmoil, and war.

It is a tale in which brother plots against brother and the dead rise to walk in the night. Here a princess masquerades as an orphan boy; a knight of the mind prepares a poison for a treacherous sorceress; and wild men descend from the Mountains of the Moon to ravage the countryside. Against a backdrop of incest and fratricide, alchemy and murder, victory may go to the men and women possessed of the coldest steel...and the coldest hearts. For when kings clash, the whole land trembles.

Critic reviews

Locus Award, 1999

"A truly epic fantasy.... The novel is notable particularly for the lived-in quality of its world, created through abundant detail...for the comparatively modest role of magic...and for its magnificent action-filled climax.... [Martin] provides a banquet for fantasy lovers with large appetites." (Publishers Weekly)

"Fans of epic fantasy should appreciate this lavishly detailed sequel to A Game of Thrones." (Library Journal)

"Dotrice's range of vocal tones, from gravelly and commanding to silkenly dangerous, creates a mood of insistence that holds the listener captive throughout the epic story." (AudioFile)

"Grabs hold and won't let go. It's brilliant." (Robert Jordan)

Great book

This second book of the series is just as good as the first one. Much more fighting in this one. Great story, can't wait to listen to the next one... Having said that, the narrator is good, but with so many characters their voices run together sometimes. But he does a great job using the same voice for the same characters.

Simply GREAT for a second book!

This is the 2nd in the series The Song of Ice and Fire. I have no idea why I did not review it already as I loved it so much. I'm trying to finish all 4 books before HBO puts the first book on the small screen for us in spring 2011. Anyway, this book continues all that happened in the first book which is basically establishing the split of the realm of Westeros into craziness between Theon Greyjoy, Rob Stark, Stannis Baratheon, Renly Baratheon and Joffrey Lannister. Not to mention Daenerys massing her knowledge to try to take over Westeros again. Then there is John Snow on the wall that learns Mance Rayder is mounting a Wildling attack on the wall to take over Westeros. Seems it is a very popular place to rule. The Iron Throne is like a power drug that pertetuates the fight. Everyone has their part and more people die. There is a GREAT water battle scene at Kings Landing. Love this book series. Loved this book. George does not disappoint.

5 stars!

Game of Thrones was an incredible series. now that its over, it has been a truly wonderful journey to dive into the A Song of Ice and Fire books. they are so similar, yet so different as well. Roy Dotrice does an incredible job narrating. I can not wait to start book 3, and am very happy to see Roy Dotrice is the narrator once again, as he was for book 1 as well. his passion and performance brings the world to life, and listening while reading the book physically makes the experience beautiful and deep. long live the world of ice and fire!

perfect narrator for a perfect series...

I don't think anyone questions the excellence of the GOT series at this point, lol. The HBO series is excellent and the books are a million times better even. SO GOOD!! I was skeptical of this narrator at first, but I quickly got used to his style, and now I cannot imagine anyone else reading it! He's really great and fits the style of the story wonderfully.

Narrator is dated, but the story is amazing

Any additional comments?

I love GOT. the books give a great detail of all the things missed in the show. While Roy Dotrice does a good job narrating his voices dont seem to match with characters. Tyrion sounds like Leprechaun or elf, and Drogo Sounds like an ogre. Some of his voices are also really really hard to understand. Regardless, I would give it a listen again.
