Shakespeare's most sophisticated comedy is a riotous tale of hopelessly unrequited passions and mistaken identity. Duke Orsino is in love with the noblewoman Olivia. She, however, has fallen for his servant Cesario, who is actually Viola, a woman disguised as a man, who loves Orsino: Confusion is rife. Meanwhile, Olivia's arrogant steward Malvolio is cruelly tricked by her uncle Sir Toby Belch, his friend Sir Andrew Aguecheek, and the maidservant Maria into believing his mistress loves him.

Story
Hamlet, Shakespeare's most popular, and perhaps most puzzling play, follows the form of a "revenge tragedy", in which the hero, Hamlet, seeks vengeance against his father’s murderer, his uncle Claudius, now the king of Denmark. Much of its fascination, however, lies in its uncertainties. This new full-cast recording - based on the most respected edition of Shakespeare's classic - expertly produced by the Folger Theatre, is perfect for students, teachers, and the everyday listener.

When the call came it seemed like the answer to my prayers. My career as a voice actor had been over for months and me and my little girl Scarlet were living back at my mum’s place. I felt like a failure professionally—and with Scarlet having problems at school, as a parent as well. So, when I was asked to narrate a new book by disappeared novelist Philippa Roberts I jumped at the chance, even if it meant leaving Scarlet with my ex, Hugo, for a few weeks. Hugo, with his perfect new home and his perfect new girlfriend Saskia. But this isn’t a dream come true. It’s a nightmare.

Story
The doorbell rings, just days after my beloved husband’s sudden death. I don’t recognise the woman on our doorstep, with her blonde highlights, a diamond bracelet identical to my own and a bouncing baby boy in her arms. As I show her inside, I notice her eyes grow wide as she takes in our spacious hallway, and the big squashy sofas that we all used to pile on. She glances at the silver-framed family photos and my little daughter hiding behind my skirts. She looks at me, her blue eyes serious. ‘I’m sorry’ she says. ‘I am your husband’s girlfriend. And this is his son.'

Airhead Juliet
Who was your favorite character and why?
I love Mercutio and Benvolio because they seem to be underappreciated side characters. Mercutio's wit makes me laugh, as does his teasing of Romeo. In truth, I appreciate all the characters in their own ways--each of them has at least one good line, and altogether they make an engaging cast.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
I think Juliet is one of Shakespeare's most interesting female characters because of her complexity. Of course she loves Romeo, but in the beginning she also tells him that she doesn't just want their romance to be a momentary passion; she also has doubts about going through with Friar Lawrence's plan to give her an artificial death. Unfortunately, the Juliet in this audiobook is really... airy. She intones everything in the same sing-song, la-di-dah, so-in-love tone that doesn't do any justice at all to the passion of her dialogue. And when she does manage to do some other emotion than doe-eyed adoration, it's misplaced, too little too late. The performance of Mercutio seemed equally lackluster to me--monotonous and disdainful rather than witty and quick.
Any additional comments?
If you want a better performance (or, at least, a more lively one) try the Romeo and Juliet with Michael Sheen and Kate Beckinsale. I prefer that one vastly over this one.
