Publisher's Summary

Terror haunts a remote Scottish Glen. Heartbroken Anna MacDonald leaves Edinburgh to find peace at the edge of a Scottish loch. Safely ensconced in her late grandmother's cottage, she can finally heal her heart and write the novel that has burned inside her for years.

Her peace is short-lived. When debonair artist Luke Tallantyre's yacht gets stranded in the loch, he seeks help at the nearest residence - Anna's croft. She finds him annoying. He instantly dislikes the stunning, but cranky hermit.

But there's indisputable evidence that a hit man is on the prowl in the village. Is he after Anna? And what is Luke keeping from her that could deepen the danger? Against their wills, they join forces and embark on an adventure neither ever imagined... including a chance at true love.

The House on the Shore is written in British English, using standard British spelling and grammar.

A wonderful read! The characters were wonderfully loveable. The descriptions of the house and town were so rich that I was able to quickly picture of the setting in my mind. Effortlessly heartwarming and compellingly mysterious, The House on the Shore is one audiobook I recommend.

"The Highlands, glens, a loch -- what's not to love"

I got the audio book for free in exchange for an unbiased review.

I loved the story, but then it plays in Scotland -- a country I'd love to visit one day. The people, customs, and highlands are described in a way that rings true, and makes me want to visit even more.
The fact that the narrator spoke with a (what I think is a true) Scottish accent just blew me. It all seemed so authentic, and I really loved it. To my relief, the narration was very clear, despite being in accent, so I was able to understand it all, which is no mean feat for a non-native speaker.

Kudos to the excellent narrator who made this already enjoyable book so much more enjoyable.

This was a lovely story....Its about Anna and a journey of self awareness....She leaves her job because the man she was dating overlooks her for a promotion she deserves and basically breaks her heart....her grandma has passed away and leaves her there ancestral home in a wee little town in Scotland...lol Well after Anna settles in she starts feeling there is someone watching her...and she in NOT wrong....She meets Luke another person searching for something to complete his life... his Yacht breaks down in her lake and he asks if he can borrow her phone..well she is suspicious of him at first and offers to take him into town to make some phone calls...well a love hate friendship develops,,and at first she fights it....Her best friend Morag has premonitions and warns Anna there is danger around her...and when someone tries to break in and scares her half to death Luke being a gentlemen, comes and stays with her while waiting on the part to fix his boat...Anna fights this because she feels her 2 dogs will help keep her safe...her dogs are great...but Luke will have none of this and romance blooms...I did not like how controlling Luke could be with Anna at times...but it all turned out good in the end! "The House on the Shore"

THE HOUSE ON THE SHORE was an intriguing story set in Scotland. It was a suspenseful romance but at times I found myself lost in the plot. Anna MacDonald has moved to her grandmother's croft when Luke Tallantyre comes knocking. He claims his yacht is stranded in the loch. She allows him in and it seems he makes himself more than welcome. Shortly after, they begin a love affair.

I wish there had been more of a back story with the characters, especially Luke. I wanted to get to know them and identify with them better. The story was mostly monotone and perhaps that's where I felt lost.

With scenes like the footbridge over the gorge and the heather covered hills I still had difficulty grasping the beauty of the landscape that I know existed. I wanted to smell the heather, feel the cottage, and see the shore. The love-making scenes were clear and descriptive but I wanted the whole picture. The story had some twists towards the end that were good.

Overall, I'm on the fence with this one. I would say it definitely wasn't a bad book but it could have been much better for me.

Ruth Urquhart did a good job narrating this story with her lovely accent. She had a nice tone and kept a perfect pace. I think it's worth a listen if someone is pondering this audiobook.

    Story
    "Mystery, passion, romance and excitment"
    Any additional comments?

This was a story full of mystery, a little action, lies, starting over, betrayal, learning to trust and giving of one’s self. Since this story takes place in Scotland I found the narration and the use of their wording made this a more believable story. There is nothing worse than loving someone and having that someone betray you taking on another lover. In Anna’s case not only was she betrayed by her boyfriend with another woman but in her job when he gives it to his new lover. In return she leaves her job runs home to the croft to get over her pain and start a new career. It isn’t long before a yacht shows up putting Anna on the edge with all the weird things happening this just adds to it. They do not hit if off so well from the start with Anna being a little smart mouth, she does give in and give the man a helping hand. They are unsure of what to think of the other but it doesn’t take long for them to agree there is a strong attraction between them.

I thought the narrator did a wonderful job going back and forward from the British accent to an American with no trouble at all. She gives the listen an even flow that draws the reader in with her great character voices. She has delightful voices for each character with wonderful strong males voices and soft simmering ones for the females. Her accent brings so much to this listen as you are pulled in from the chemistry to the mystery. Her tones are nice and even smooth all the way through with no places being louder or softer than the other. Which means you could not tell if any breaks were taken. She is very easy to listen to with her very sweet voices. I was very impressed with her many different voices she has no trouble switching from one to the other as well as one accent to the other. You have no trouble understanding what each character is feeling from pain to laughter she does it very well. You can tell this is one narrator that really put some thought into each character voice. I thought she gave a very delightful strong performance that you can get lost in.

With things going on around Anna that just do not add up she if left guessing what in the world is going on as a stranger turn up, bullets fly by her, break-ins’ and so much more. Before this book is through lives will be held in the balance, people could die all for what? This story is about Anna, her heart, her live and her land but so many more lives are at risk. What is up with the next door neighbor wanting to get all buddy, buddy. Yes they had a friendship when they were younger but nothing more. This just doesn’t feel right something is so wrong with the world around her.

Luke stole my heart for the start he even had me laughing as he takes on the women whose door he knocks on for help. He does have a few things he is hiding which will come between these two. I loved the supporting characters from the town’s people to her friends. There is nothing like living in a small town where everyone helps everyone. The down fall is everyone is also in everyone’s business. I loved how the mystery of long ago played into the story. Did I see something move, was that a ghost or is someone out there really watching. The story has the just the right amount of mystery to pull the reader in giving you a very entertaining read with a lovely romance. You have no doubt there is a powerful pull between Luke and Anna as well as the mistrust that goes with it. Both of these people have a hurtful past one is trying to deal with and the other is running away from. Can these two make a relationship work with both living a world apart as they work on the mystery of what is going on around them? I really enjoyed this audio as I am sure you will also. You do have to remember this is written with British slang which might throw you if you do not know what something is called. The author does a wonderful job telling you what it is as she weaves it around her story. I thought this was well written with a wonderful plot that most will find delight in the at times humorous listen.

I enjoyed this book, especially the beautiful description of the Scottish country side. With Victoria Howard's words, I could imagine myself there, in a place I would love to visit. Ruth Urquhart also did a beautiful job narrating The House on the Shore. Her accents were believable and brought the characters to life.

    "Scottish romance"

I received a free audio copy of this book for review. A suspenseful romance that tells of modern day life as well as a quick look into Scottish history. While some of the suspense wasn't so supsenseful, it was well written, well read and an easy listen.

I would definitely recommend this and will read more of this author.

"Love, Drama, and Mystery all in one book."
What made the experience of listening to The House on the Shore the most enjoyable?

I love that it is placed in Scotland and the discription of the countryside.

Who was your favorite character and why?

My favorite character was Morrag. She was such a loveable and helpful friend. One which everyone wishes they had in their own life.

Which character – as performed by Ruth Urquhart – was your favorite?

Anna was my favorite character. She performed her just as I think the author would want her loveable, independent, yet just a little stubborn.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

My favorite moment in the book is where Luke is doing the stake out waiting to rescue Anna.

    Any additional comments?

I really enjoyed this audiobook version , it is lovely romantic story filled with suspence and mystery.
The author writing draws you into the true feel of the remote part of the Scottish highlands in which the story is set.
I like the characters good and bad and the fact that you where never quite sure who the "bad guys" where until much later in the plot.
To my non scottish ears, Ruth Urquhart did a good job of the narration and scottish words, bringing authenticity to the book.
    thumbs up from me .

    "Great story, wonderfully narrated"
If you could sum up The House on the Shore in three words, what would they be?

    Interesting and enjoyable

Who was your favorite character and why?

Anna, she doesn't give up even when things aren't going her way

What about Ruth Urquhart’s performance did you like?

Her narration was really good and she made a really good jobof the Scottishisms

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I found myself really rooting for Anna and Luke

    Any additional comments?

I was lucky enough to recieve a copy of this from the author and I thoroughly enjoyed it and am very grateful to the author. I would say that there were the occasional word which seemed incongruous in a book about Scotland (e.g. tailgate, sidewalk) which I associate with American fiction, and the narration seemed a little slow in places but all in all it's a great book and I would definitely recommend it.

    "Wow! What a Great LIsten!"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I already have. I really enjoyed the story and narration. Both were top notch.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Well, of course I loved the two border collies! At risk of being predictable, Anna was a wonderful character, so strong, so real, so vulnerable. She was my favorite. ;o)

Which character – as performed by Ruth Urquhart – was your favourite?

Ruth is an amazing narrator. She did a superb job with the Scottish and English accents. I wished I'd known her (because I am an American male who grew up near Cape Cod, much like the Luke character!) so I could have coached her on just one or two mispronounced American words. But heck, as a woman who is not from this country, she did an astounding job of getting it right. I could never hope to be that natural sounding in another land's accent! Her versatility was also amazing - from female to male voices - all were clear and really believable. She gets an A plus!

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

A heady romance set near the remote lochs of Scotland.

    Any additional comments?

My favorite part of this story was the setting. I've never been to Scotland, but now feel as if I have visited. The word paintings were beautiful and evocative. Brilliantly done. I also found the plot and dialog very believable and totally captivating. Thank you for a wonderful job, Ms. Howard and Ms. Urquhart!

    "Nice Summer Beach Read"

What a nice book to listen to when driving down the road or lounging at the beach.

The narrator had quite a lot to handle switching from Scottish & British accents then to American. As an American, Luke's "voice" wasn't very believable at times, and he pronounced certain words (garage being one) with an obvious British pronunciation. Of course the gorgeous Scottish lilts were worth some moments of cringeworthy Luke speak.

But the book was lovely. I found myself yelling, "where's Morag?!" when one scene ended and another scene started, so I was drawn in.

Anna, the main character, is a stubborn, strong willed, hardheaded woman, and I liked her very much. I'm rather sick of the mushy, has-to-have-a-man type that seems to be in most romance books. She doesn't need anybody, and she is out to follow her dream as an author. And I appreciated the fact that she did not compromise that dream.

This book has some "love-making" scenes, but they were very tame and pretty clean. No dirty descriptions of pieces and parts.

This is an easy and enjoyable listen overall, and I recommend it.

Would you listen to The House on the Shore again? Why?

I do think I would enjoy listening to this again. It's like a movie in your head and you can't let go of the characters.

What did you like best about this story?

I enjoyed the fact that Anna, the main character, returns to her homeland and finds romance after she was betrayed by the man she loved. She is an honest hard-working woman who gives her all to those she cares about.

Which character – as performed by Ruth Urquhart – was your favourite?

Anna and Luke are both my favorite. They have such an interesting relationship and it's a joy to find out how their love grows. Their love scenes are nice and steamy without too much graphic information. It's best to leave that to each listener's imagination !

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

This book is awesome but it did take a little while before I was hooked into the story in such a way that I couldn't put it down. I found myself listening while puttering around the house to find out what was going to happen next.

    Any additional comments?

The amazing voice artist Ruth Urquhart kept me on the edge of my seat during the intense portions of the book and she kept my toes curled up during the sexy parts! I adore her Scottish accent and can't wait to hear her in other books! I was given this audio book in exchange for a review and I am extremely glad I received it!! Wonderful story and the scenery it portrayed in my mind's eye was so beautiful. Thanks so much for this fantastic story !! Victoria Howard is now among my favorite authors !

    "The House on the Shore"

This romantic suspense novel set in Scotland delivers a good product in many ways, but in others it fell short for me.

The Scottish setting is wonderfully described. Add in the information about the history and local culture, and it’s easy to imagine yourself in those surroundings. The suspense/mystery held my interest.

Where I struggled with the book was what seemed to me like contrived plot lines. Two examples being the boat breakdown and the conveniently owned cottage for the heroine to run away to. It felt like something from a mediocre chick lit novel.

I did enjoy the relationship between Anna and Luke, and their interactions felt true.

Ruth Urquhart narrated this book and I very much enjoyed listening to her.

A good book, I particularly enjoyed the setting in the highlands, the details, the descriptions of the life in the remoteness with the fact that there are difficulties with the communication, shopping and other basic day to day life. I enjoyed the solidarity within the local residents and the details of the estate. There were a few moments from the main character Luke which were annoying with some of the words he used. This was a welcome change from my normal thrillers, spy, police, etc novels, the sex scenes were a little over the top but they were short and moved on quickly, it is the rest of the book that I really enjoyed the light suspense and mystery a quick and easy listen. This book was originally published in 2009, and I was offered an audio version from the author.
