Publisher's Summary

Every once in a while, you need to get away from it all.

I was a woman on the edge, shaken and shattered after a breakup that felt like it tore my entire world apart. My best friend, sick of watching me drown in misery and melancholy, harassed me until I agreed to go with her on a weeklong wilderness retreat.

She promised days spent bonding and getting in touch with our inner badasses. It was supposed to be all about the two of us roughing it and making do with the bare minimum. She assured me we were going to be pushed to our limits in ways that were unimaginable. Neither one of us could have ever guessed just how right she was.

Nowhere in the glossy brochure did it say anything about the fact I was going to have to battle the insufferable but deliciously rugged and sexy trail guide instead of the elements. The brochure also forgot to mention the part that warned when you left civilization behind, there was no place to pack your inhibitions and fears.

I was told that I would be facing a week where the only thing I should expect was the unexpected. However, no one mentioned that I was going to have to fight for my life - and my heart - as soon as I ventured into the unknown. I was a pro at hiding from my feelings, but when it came time to face a real threat, one that could change everything, I learned I was more of a no surrender, no retreat kind of girl.

Retreat is a stand-alone novel, the first in the Getaway series, which centers on the hardheaded and brokenhearted Warner brothers and the women who dare to love them.

These boys are very good at putting the wild in wilderness.

    "Another hit series for Jay!"

Jay Crownover makes a departure from her tatooed bad (good) boys and enters the world of ranchers/ cowboys. I was so looking forward to this book and I was not disappointed at all! I would given the story 10 stars if I could. I can't wait for the next book! I would have given 5 stars for Overall but the narration...

The only negative comment I have is with the narrator (as others have written). However, I'm not sure if it's the narrator or the director/ editor/ producer (who is responsible for the speed of narration?). When I started the book I wasn't sure how I was going to continue but then I changed the listening speed to from 1x to 1.25x on my device. I found the problem! This is the perfect speed. I had no trouble listening after that. In fact I couldn't stop!

Worth a credit? YES! But change the speed on your device.

"Loved the story more than narration"

Jay is a new to me author and I read the story before I listened to it. I love the story, so much happens to the heroine! I really liked her growth throughout. With the narration, I couldn't finish. I enjoyed the female parts but not the male. I am not sure if most had to do with the Wyoming accent (which I am from there and this is not a Wyoming accent) or just male in general but I just couldn't do it.

    "I read the reviews"

I read the reviews and bought the book anyways. The first chapter was hard to get through just because the narrator over acted every word. As the story developed and more characters were introduced it got a lot better.

    "Oh the tears and excitement!!"

I read this book as soon as Jay released it. I just finished listening to it. It is definitely getting added to my relisten list. Natasha did an amazing job relaying the emotion that were laid out by Jay. A must read/listen.

    "On the fence!!"

It's Jay Crownover and that right there meant this was an auto download for me. Let me be honest, I struggled with this listen. The primary reason being the narrator. She was not the right fit for this book. Natasha wasn't horrible but she didn't bring the characters to life and I am used to with other narrators, Anyone who has listened to Crownover's past books knows that the characters are core to the story line. Basically, I would say Natasha will either be a narrator you can stand or one who puts you off.

As or the story... this was definitely different. Two besties head off on vacation. Most would think of a destination place, but these two decide to head off to a ranch. Luckily, the have hot and sexy almost cowboys. As a group of vacations set off for a week out in the wilderness, the hate between Leo and Cy turns hot which turns into more. The secondary characters are also interesting. There is an outside story that involves the DEA. A whole lot of bullets flying and more.

As usual I would say definitely worth my credit b/c it's Jay Crownover but I hope the next book gets a better narrator

"A ROLLERCOASTER RIDE I DIDN'T WANT TO END"

Jay Crownover surpassed all my expectations with this riveting story that took me on an unstoppable journey of eager anticipation as flirty angsty banter leads to a toe-curling romance. But, before I could be lulled into a euphoric romance high, midway Ms Crownover expertly spins the story to include chilling suspense where nail-biting drama, danger and intrigue are cleverly weaved around an alpha hero and a feisty heroine who weren't expecting (and weren't ready) to fall hard.. and to fall deep during a time of turmoil and terror.

It was meant to be an easygoing retreat for Leora (aka Leo) and her bff Emry who'd talked Leo into it to try to cheer her up after being royally played by her ex who was shockingly married.. and married to her boss of all things.. but nothing could've prepared them for what was to come. It was meant to be an adventure holiday to taste Wyoming's Wild West where they would be part of a team who would casually trek the wilderness trails on horseback and camp out in two-man tents.. but nowhere in the brochure did it say you'll be riding for your lives, dodging bullets and praying for a miracle. It was meant to be a salve to Leo's injured heart, a girl's week away to chill out from their demanding jobs and a chance to push themselves out of their comfort zones. But never was it supposed to be a gruelling life-changing journey of epic highs and heart-shattering lows, of humor and heartache and of heated pleasure and gut-wrenching pain that would leave emotional and visual scars of what transpired one fateful week in Wyoming.

The Ranch was owned and run by the three Warner brothers.. all strong handsome rugged alpha types.. and Leo was instantly drawn to Cyrus (aka Cy) the oldest of the brothers whose deep voice did something to her libido. He was a strong sexy cowboy in biker boots.. but things didn't start off well when Leo made a remark that rubbed Cy the wrong way. From then on they butt heads with moody glances, fiery banter and gruff words.. but underneath the snipes there's heat and banked desire which sizzles in the air and slowly they start to get to know each other. And the sexual tension between them finally ignites in the shower scene.. then it's game on with a mutual agreement of passion and no promises. However, it was a very different tension that soon gripped the party when an unexpected threat leads to a shocking discovery.. and from then on it was a gruelling fight for survival.

Told entirely from Leo's POV this fast paced story started off well with a grumpy walls-up dark hero battling his desires for a red headed feisty City girl.. but it morphed into a gripping and tense journey into the unknown as nail-biting drama led to bloodshed, tears, fears and shattered souls. There was character development and self-discovery as Leo was well and truly forced out of her comfort zone, had starling revelations about herself and not only found a life she loved but the love of her life too. There were good sizzling sex scenes and heartbreaking emotional drama which made this an addictive rollercoaster ride I had to be forcefully pulled away from and I can't wait for the next instalment into the lives and loves of these loving Warner brothers. In the beginning I wasn't too sure about Natasha Soudek's narration which was too slow for me but, once I sped her up a bit (x 1.5), I was good to go and ended up really enjoying it.

Worth a credit? Yes definitely it delivered way way more than I expected.. multi-layered characters who had been damaged by love before but, despite the odds.. and during a time of deadly drama, they found their strengths, mended their hearts.. and thankfully took a chance on love one more time.

    "5 Retreat Stars"

I loved this book and I am going to tell you why.

First we have to talk about the incredible relationship Leo & Em have, they are what everyone should have in a best friend. Leo is in need of some girl time and some time to come to terms with things from her past.
So Em convinces her to come with her the journey isn’t easy but I loved that Em was there for Leo no matter what.
And in turn when Em needs her Leo is there for her. It’s incredible to have a friendship like that.

We meet Cy, and his brothers. But it’s Cy that draws Leo in. She can’t help it this gruff brooding man has that something she is just drawn to, but it’s not one sided either. And they both try hard to ignore it but that’s the thing about attraction right; when it hits you are all in wither you’re ready or not. (The Shower Scene people is hell-a HOT!!)

Their experience is something no one saw coming and it’s going to change everyone involved. I loved the action and the interaction between all of the characters. It’s not like your everyday romance book it’s so much more. And I can’t wait for the second book in this series! I need more.

I wasn’t sure of Natasha’s narration at first I kind of had to get used to her and her voices for the different characters. But once I did, I quiet enjoyed it.

    Worth the credit.. Umm YEAH!

*You don't have to like my review but its 100% my opinion, and I am allowed to have it.*

    "Narration Completely Ruined the Book"

Come on (rolling my eyes), why do you all continue to do this to us? We all know Jay Crownover is an excellent author, but why do you continue to ruin the books with your poor choice in performers. I couldn't even finish it, sounds like she was straining just to speak and the slow monotone made it worst; my throat was hurting for her (similar to seeing or hearing someone throw up and it causes you to do the same). Sorry, I call for a re-read in order to adequately provide a helpful review.

    "Way TOO much introspection!"

I paid for the audiobook, so I felt compelled to finish it. Even as the main character droned on and on about herself, her feelings, her mental agonizing, which made it somewhat more of a chore to finish than a pleasure. To top it off --whoever chose the narrator for this story must have felt that a voice that drones would fit a story that does the same -- either did a very Good job matching story to voice -- or simply didn't care that sub par narration wouldn't matter with a story that dragged out way too much with the internal musings of the self absorbed main character. Sorry for a poor review but I was sorry for the money I spent on the audiobook.

    "Two thumbs up!"

I loved the narrator. I honesty didn't realize that it was a female narrator throughout the whole book.
