Sweet romance!

This is a wonderful series and after meeting Jennie, I was anxious to meet her sisters! This one highlights the story of Hattie. Hattie is extremely unhappy when brought to Deadwood, and quickly uses her father's moonshine as the escape she needs from her reality. When given the chance to leave with Roy, she jumps on it, thinking this is it, she will be married and find her happily ever after. Boy was she ever wrong! After being sold to the local brothel, Hattie's alcoholic tendencies grow, and she is trapped in her own nightmare. Until Hugh Bradley comes to find her. This story is one of addiction, hardship and unconditional love. Kari Trumbo is able to compose a story with the underlying theme of family, faith and love as we get to see Hugh and Hattie's relationship start and blossom. It's a tough road, but these two are determined to get to their destination. I can't wait to hear about the next sister!

Meghan Kelly is amazing with historical romances, and she brings this story to life. Her beautiful narration of Hattie and Hugh is full of the emotional and physical turmoil that Hattie endures, as well as the struggle Hugh deals with to bring her home safely. She provides a wonderfully entertaining performance.

Young and Willful

Hattie Arnsby kidnapped by a man who is not who he claims to be, finds herself sold to a brothel. Hattie already weakened by the whiskey she has become addicted to is self incriminating. When a deputy frees her from the brothel she has to decide between freeing herself from the addiction and returning home to her family or return to the brothel and the life she lead there. Then there is the handsome deputy who has offered her another way out and a new life. Hugh Bradley, Hattie’s rescuer only wants to return Hattie home to her family, but when complications arise he has to make decisions that could change both of their lives forever.
This story is moral and ethical Hattie had to decide what was right and what was wrong and have the willingness to decide even with her cloudy judgment.
Thank you Meghan Kelly for gifting me this audible book for a fair and honest review. You did an amazing job in the telling of Hattie’s story.

Heartfelt!

What a wonderful story of life in the hills of South Dakota. Megan Kelly brought the love and pain to life of the characters.
Hattie felt sorry for herself. She felt she was a prisoner everywhere she went. She started drinking moonshine that her father made and got hooked on alcohol. When she got to Deadwood, SD with her sisters, she took off with Roy. She thought he wanted to marry her, but he sold her to a whorehouse and took all the money she made. A lawman named Hugh Bradly came to her room while Roy was beating her. Then the trials and adventure got exciting.

Great story of facing down your demons

We met both Hattie and Hugh in Book 1, Dreams in Deadwood. Hattie is the attention seeking sister, and who has disappeared...presumably a run away. Hugh is the older brother of Aiden...his treatment of Aiden when he returned to the family ranch was akin to that of the elder brother in the story of The Prodigal Son. Now it's a year later and Hugh has been deputized and is searching for Hattie. When Hugh finds Hattie, she is working as an enslaved prostitute and is an alcoholic. It takes some doing, but he rescues her from the 'house', but due to extenuating circumstances, they are forced to remain in the town until a judge arrives. During this time, Hugh has re-committed his life to his God and is trying to show Hattie that she is worth more than her body. But can Hattie withstand the temptation of the drink and realize that she is still loved and wanted by her family...and possibly Hugh? This book had some gut wrenching moments when you just wanted to wrap your arms around Hattie...then there were those moments when you wanted to shake some sense into her. Fantastic ending with a sweet HEA. Now I need to get the story of Hattie's twin...another great job by the narrator. Historical fiction is not usually at the top of my must read-listen list, but this series is captivating.
