Publisher's Summary

Times are hard for newly minted vampire Merit. Ever since shapeshifters announced their presence to the world, humans have been rallying against supernaturals - and they're camping outside of Cadogan House with protest signs that could turn to pitchforks at any moment. Inside its doors, things between Merit and her Master, green-eyed heartbreaker Ethan Sullivan, are tense. But then the mayor of Chicago calls Merit and Ethan to a clandestine meeting and tells them about a violent vamp attack that has left three women missing. His message is simple: get your House in order. Or else.

Merit needs to get to the bottom of this crime, but it doesn't help that she can't tell who's on her side. So she secretly calls in a favor from someone who's tall, dark, and part of an underground vamp group that may have some deep intel on the attack. Merit soon finds herself in the heady, dark heart of Chicago's supernatural society - a world full of vampires who seem to be ready to fulfill the protesting human's worst fears, and a place where she'll learn that you can't be a vampire without getting a little blood on your hands.

Bite into another Chicagoland Vampires novel.

    "Shocking Plot Twist"

I must admit, I have mixed feelings about this book. I really enjoyed it until the very shocking plot twist at the end. Then it was sad and the story ended on a sad note. I reeeally had to think about it before getting the next book in the series. On the one hand, it's nice to be surprised by a plot. On the other hand, arrrgggh! In real life, sometimes bad things happen. But aren't fictional books about escaping from reality or taking a vacation for a bit? Hmmm. This is why I have mixed feelings. I was finally curious enough to get the next one. I'm hoping things will brighten up a bit for Merit (I know, dark vampire books). Hopefully some humor or romance will be included.

"I'm not sure what's put me off....."

I like this series and while I'm not crazy about the ending on this one it was still a good book.

I didn't really care for the way it was read. I've listened to quite a bit of Cynthia Holloway on other books and liked her very much so I know it's not her. In this case I just don't think she lines up with what I have in my head where Merit is concerned.

Or it could be I'm taking it out on her because I really didn't like the end of this book.:)

I'll have to think about whether I want the next installment to be words on the page or words in my ears. Something's put me off this book and I just can't put my finger on what it is.

"Ethan - is he or isn't he?"

Ethan plays an interesting role in this book in the series. A lot going on between Merat and her long time girlfriend. I'm hooked on this series and looking forward to more "episodes".

    "Good book, okay performance"
What made the experience of listening to Hard Bitten the most enjoyable?

Love the book and the story line.

How could the performance have been better?

The performance just fell flat in a lot of places. Emphasis on the wrong words and just a lack of emotion in some parts.

I really like all the books in this series, so if you're reading this review, you haven't read them yet! Start at the beginning, they get better as you go!

    "ApPRISHiating Sardonic Deals Struck"

That ^ should be the title of the series. Holloway's pronunciation kills me. Someone buy Neill a thesaurus. NY Times best selling author? Really?

Overall 2/5 stars and that's because I didn't expect her to go down the plot rabbit hole at all but she dipped an entire foot inside. I was pleasantly surprised when all parties involved in the mess were revealed. There were ties that I did not anticipate so, kudos on that note. Take the previous compliment with a grain of salt because, as Merit once said, it's mostly "non-cerebral" otherwise.

I've found I can be entertained by this series as long as I imagine it's Buffy: TVS in written form. Except, you know, they are all supposed to be 25+ yet they act like they are 15 tops.

My biggest gripe is the never-ending parade of Mary Sues and Gary Stus(sp?). How about some "vampires" that were turned when they were much older? Throw in some relatable characters that aren't the cliche plain-but-still-young-&-super-model-hot-looking. If I could, I would ask Neill to stop pandering and playing it safe. Break away from the Made for Everyone formula and take risks.

I AM pleased with the ending though. Good riddance. My full review on the series will be posted on the last book. Well, if I make it that far.

This was the hardest book of the series for me to finish. I love the characters, the unique story, but omg the author has broken my heart with this one.

    "Awesome series"

I had this series in my wish list for awhile. I've listened to all the books back to back. this book all most made me cry because of Merritt's lost chance at love.

    "Wow"

I have loved all the books so far and this one won't disappoint you. It made me angry, it made me laugh and cry. I do believe this is the best book of the series so far. The ending is not what you expect, which is the best kind of ending, right?

Also I like that they have used the same narrator in all the audible books so far. I like it much better that way. The voices and way of speech for the characters are always the same.
