Publisher's Summary

He was tall, at least six feet, with dirty blond hair that hung over his eyes. His T-shirt read Nietzsche Is My Homeboy.

So, that was Matt. Who Julie Seagles likes. A lot. But there is also Finn. Who she flat out loves.

Complicated? Awkward? Completely.

But really, how was this freshly-minted Boston transplant and newbie college freshman supposed to know that she would end up living with the family of an old friend of her mother’s? This was all supposed to be temporary. Julie wasn’t supposed to be important to the Watkins family, or to fall in love with one of the brothers. Especially the one she’s never quite met. But what does that really matter? Finn gets her, like no one ever has before. They have connection. But here’s the thing about love, in all its twisty, bumpy permutations - it always throws you a few curves. And no one ever escapes unscathed.

    Story
    "Growth and Evolution: Awesome read"

It was not what I was expecting and it wasn't the usual, run of the mill romantic comedy. What a pleasant surprise. The narrator made all the difference...took this story to the next level.

This books starts off with Julie Seagle, leaving home in Ohio, arriving in Boston Massachusetts to attend Whitney College. Upon arrival, she found out the apartment she rented on Craigslist, didn't really exist and she had no where to go. Luckily, her mother's college roommate Erin Watkins lived in Cambridge, so Erin offered Julie a place to stay until she found accommodations.
Erin's son Matt came and picked her up, and thus began Julie's introduction to the Watkins Household.
This family was definitely a circus and it takes the entire book to unravel. see Erin was an attorney and also a scholar. Her husband Roger was another scholar who researches ecosystems involving algae etc. Oldest son Finn wasn't there but was supposed to be gallivanting the globe during humanitarian work. Matt was a double major at MIT and youngest sister Celeste carried around a cut-out of her older brother Finn because she missed him so much.

This family was really smart and really strange, and soon Julie's arrival began having profound changes in the family dynamics and forced the family to confront issues long swept under the rug.

This book was layered yet so enjoyable. It seemed that Finn was the family connector when I started the book because he was the golden child. But as the book progressed, it became clear that Matt was the glue that held the Watkins family together. I loved the individual as well as the family growth as everyone had to face the issues they were running from. By the end of the book, everything made more sense and I was blown away. I loved it. The narrator was awesome. This was definitely YA-NA with a bite.
If you want a YA book with some substance and was more about familial love than romantic love, then give this book a whirl. It has romantic love but this book was about personal growth and continuing a journey.

    "Surprisingly Good"

I read the reviews and I am glad I chose the book. Good story. The narrator was great. I will look for more books by the JP and other books narrated by the JW. I did question whether someone straight out of high school would be so knowledgeable of life but then I remembered from the start you could tell/feel she was quite intelligent. I will listen again.

    "Fun Fun Fun!"

I enjoyed the story and the narration was very good. Somewhere towards the middle of the story, I was able to guess the outcome of the story but it did not keep me from staying engaged throughout the entire story. This was a nice, light, romance with a refreshing lack of overt sex scenes.

    "Flat-Out Loved it!"

I actually give this book 4.5 stars.

This was an incredibly clever story with a great plot. I love it when the author makes the characters so real and vivid that I become so invested in their lives. I cared about them, cried for/with them, and rooted for them.

Celeste was adorable and quirky and perfect. Just like Julie, I didn't want Celeste to change completely and I'm glad she didn't. This family was so broken but put on such a facade. It was heartbreaking and sad.

There is something that happens in the story that I guessed right off, but then doubted myself several times only to be right in the end. It was just so weird how the family lived. However, it was all explained in the end and was realistic. My small issue with the "thing" (I don't want to give it away) is that I feel it went on too long. I was ready for it to be over long before it was.

I love angst and heartbreak but I love the happy endings and the romantic love story the most. In some of these angsty books, I feel like the happy ever after is so short at the end. I need more. I want to see more happiness for these characters that suffered, cried, and hurt so much throughout the story.

This was a really great story with some exceptional characters. I recommend this for anyone that does like to cry, laugh, and have their happy ending.

"Great story and finally a Narrator that was good"

I have just recently started listening to audio books and I'm still not sure how I feel about it. This is the first book where I truly enjoyed the Narrator and didn't feel like they sounded goofy. I loved this story, it had allot of funny parts and I found myself actually laughing out loud. The narrator did a great job of playing out the different emotions without sounding ridiculous. Out of the 4 or 5 books I have now listened to I am most happy overall with this one.

"I flat out loved this book"

not exactly what i was expecting when i read the blurb of the book. I knew what was going on very early on in the book but still didn't make me like it any less. I loved the characters (especially celeste) I loved all the quirkiness. Made me laugh out loud & tear up at times.

"Serious and sarcastic all at the same time!"

I picked up FLAT-OUT LOVE in an Audible sale because Julia Whelan is one of my favorite female audiobook narrators and I had seen a lot of positive reactions from my Goodreads friends. I really didn’t know what it was about before I started but I was pleasantly surprised with its content and tone!

FLAT-OUT LOVE was a wonderful mix of serious and sarcasm. Main character Julie ends up moving in with a family friend (and the family that comes with her) after being scammed on an apartment listing for college and ends up staying there throughout the year. The story revolves around the family that Julie moves in with and their delicate balance of affection and stoicism, most noted by 13-year-old Celeste’s attachment to a cardboard cut-out of her older brother Finn, who is away travelling the world. I won’t rehash the whole plot but essentially Julie brings levity and a fresh outlook on life to this family and really breaks through a point where they were all standing still, holding their breath. I loved Julia’s personality and attitude. She brought a light to that house and so much humor, sarcasm, and high spirits. There were plenty of serious moments, as this book is clearly harboring some deep secret with Celeste’s quirks that no one will talk about, but I thought the balance was really well done. If this had been a strictly serious or tragic book, I wouldn’t have enjoyed it nearly as much.

Every relationship was really well-crafted. Julie is able to connect with each person in the house on a different level, even if it’s not deeply. Julie shakes things up and yes, breaks a few hearts by making them admit the “bad things”, but ultimately is able to show them that standing still is no way to live if you can’t ever move forward. I don’t really know how I feel about the romance because without spoiling anything, it gets complicated on soooo many levels and there’s a level of trust that was broken with me as a reader that I don’t think I could have personally come back from, but Julie is a forgiving soul and of course she wants to make the relationship work because it is quite sweet in its core.

While FLAT-OUT LOVE was a quick and addicting read for me, I really don’t have any interest in its companions. I tried reading FLAT-OUT CELESTE and her voice was just very difficult for me to at least listen to, though I don’t know about reading, and I don’t have an interest in FLAT-OUT MATT since it’s really just the same story but in parts from Matt’s POV. Julie was the best part of the book and without her, the stories don’t really have a draw for me.

I think FLAT-OUT LOVE is a great contemporary read and good book for those who don’t want to shy away from real life but also appreciate some good humor and lightness in times of darkness.

    "Sweet Read!"

This was a great story. I found it very hard to put down. The narrator was remarkable.
I do feel like we was left hanging a bit on the absent father. I kept wishing for a little more. Overall this was a fantastic read I would highly recommend.
