Publisher's Summary

Since half-vampire Cat Crawfield and her undead lover Bones met six years ago, they’ve fought against the rogue undead, battled a vengeful Master vampire, and pledged their devotion with a blood bond. Now it’s time for a vacation. But their hopes for a perfect Paris holiday are dashed when Cat awakes one night in terror. She’s having visions of a vampire named Gregor, who’s more powerful than Bones and has ties to her past that even Cat herself didn’t know about.

Gregor believes Cat is his and won’t stop until he has her. As the battle begins between the vamp who haunts her nightmares and the one who holds her heart, only Cat can break Gregor’s hold over her. She’ll need all the power she can summon in order to bring down the baddest bloodsucker she’s ever faced … even if getting that power will result in an early grave.

Very Trying

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I'll have to get back to you on that.

What could Jeaniene Frost have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Stopped making a Mary Sue and Gary Stu out of Cat and Bones. They are becoming way overpowered.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

Not use Valley girl accent for very minor/secondary female characters nor nasally, whiny intonations for minor/secondary male characters. The Valley girl accent totally took off 1.5 - 2 stars in performance for me.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

The kiss-and-make-up sex scene.

Any additional comments?

I was about to start Book 5 when I read a couple of reviews warning that it contained spoilers for the Night Huntress World Books 1 and 2, side stories which are apparently a VERY good idea to read if you don't want to be a little confused about how did what happened when and who's who in Book 5. Sooo, off I went to get those two books I had initially not intended to read.

An essential for Vampire Fiction

Usually, a series can tend to get dull after so many books, not this one....I've read them all and still waiting for another to come out. Cat and Bones are the ultimate supernatural couple and their "interactions" are some of the steamiest, hottest and best written scenes I've had the pleasure of reading so far. Most erotic scenes I've read in other books are just ridiculous or predictable....to the point where I'm rolling my eyes . Not the scenes between Cat and Bones...they are fantastically written and the imagery you get is best experienced in a dim room behind closed doors. It's just that good.

If you are a fan of this genre - THIS is the series to own. Worth every credit or penny you spend.

My heart broke for Cat. But it was her own fault

What did you love best about Destined for an Early Grave?

I loved, loved when Bones had finally reached his limit with Cat going off and doing what she wanted because she was always trying to save him. And it never ended well or could have ended better is she slowed down and realize she is not everyone's savior. He's a vamp and has been for such a long time, I am sure he knows what he is doing and always has some kind of plan. But I guess being a vamp and using communication is something that bones needs to work on as well when he is dealing with a human with sass and balls! She isn't some kept pet that is just gonna sit around and wait for him to save the day. She's the super hero too! I love them together! Butting heads with hot passion and deep love all the way through.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Bones. When he went off his rocker after Cat left and how crazy I can only imagine he was feeling when he was playing that piano so nice and calmly and then to have it fly across the room. I felt every bit of that emotion. This scene made me yearn for a life action film or tv show even more!

What about Tavia Gilbert’s performance did you like?

always amazing

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes...I was excited all the way through.

Any additional comments?

Next book will have some work cut out for it to get me to this type of excitement again! But I'm sure Frost can do it.

Take me I am yours!

Would you consider the audio edition of Destined for an Early Grave to be better than the print version?

Great series. Is there a missing Audio Book? I noticed some details in the next book 'This Side of the Grave' that was not covered in this Book.

When did Denise become a ghoul? When did Cat use her kinetic power to damage furniture and save her friends?

Apparently I am so into this series, I would love to hear what happened.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Drac and Ian - got a real chuckle - their humor is so suttle.. and Minkeries... Yipeee

Which character – as performed by Tavia Gilbert – was your favorite?

Bones and Cat - Hot Hot Hot!

Any additional comments?

Would love to hear the missing pieces, between this book and This Side of the Grave - this is the first time I noticed missing pieces of the story.

Disappointing...in my opinion

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Yes, I drive long hours so it did keep me entertained but I was cursing Cat out most of the time.

Would you be willing to try another book from Jeaniene Frost? Why or why not?

Yes, but I was disappointed with this one.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

Yes.

Any additional comments?

First off, the narrator makes Gregor sound like Borat...it was so painful for me to hear. I love Bones' character but his voice is annoying as well - but I can deal, Gregor was another story...horrible (kept picturing Sasha Baron Cohen). I was definitely on Team Bones w/ this book - Cat was very annoying and I hated the double standards where she was so quick to assume the worst with Bones when she herself made horrible decision after another (imagine if someone would have been snapping photos when she was at a certain famous vampires house...in bed with him). Oh my goodness I was cursing her out the whole way home. I don't want to spoil the book so I won't give any spoilers but I just didn't feel this book fit the characters that had been portrayed in the first 3 books. They were so unfamiliar and neurotic -felt like a forced fight and as a result, the predictable separation, then reunion. Hated the Gregor storyline and the changes that Cat underwent came out of nowhere caught me totally off guard, seemed rushed to me. I'll still read additional book was I can't say I really enjoyed this like the first 3 books.

Excellent!

What did you love best about Destined for an Early Grave?

Loved the relationship with all the characters, the humor, the love, the compassion, the hate...

Have you listened to any of Tavia Gilbert’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

She does a wonderful job acting. It feels like you are listening to a room full of characters.

Top author and listen

I am a huge fan of the Night Huntress series. Totally exciting and very well presented. Love it to bits. I'll be reading all the series again. :)

another great book

Still loving the series, as fresh as the first book. I get a little annoyed with Cat's stupid self-questioning at times and berated her in myown mind quite a lot in this book. But overall the characters stay fresh and the new ones are developed well. One note: the fifth book is not the next one to read. From the author's website: "Reading order of Night Huntress series including Night Huntress World spin-off novels: HALFWAY TO THE GRAVE; ONE FOOT IN THE GRAVE; AT GRAVE’S END; DESTINED FOR AN EARLY GRAVE; FIRST DROP OF CRIMSON; ETERNAL KISS OF DARKNESS; THIS SIDE OF THE GRAVE." Once I found this (after starting the fifth one and not knowing what many references were about) it all makes much more sense. Enjoy!

Going Downhill

I think this series is not getting better. The story is OK but Cat is becoming annoying and whining. Now I hear the name of this narrator and start to cringe because I hear that strident voice arguing with everything and always having to have the last word and always knowing more than everyone else. . I only enjoyed this story when Bones finally gave Cat a setdown.
I might try one more book but not sure if it will redeem this series for me.

Wonderful :)

You know when you have a viciously bad itch that you just cannot reach? How it irritates and makes your skin crawl to the point where you want to scream and take your skin off? Now, remember the gushing waterfall of relief that washes over you once you finally get it scratched? You know that cleansing relief that is so powerful that you think you might sell your soul to maintain it. That is what it is like to read this installment. As always, Tavia Gilbert is perfect.
