Publisher's Summary

Lady Arabella Blydon has beauty and a brain, and she's tired of men who can see only one without the other.

When a suitor tells Arabella he's willing to overlook her appalling bluestocking tendencies on account of her looks and fortune, she decides to take a break from the Marriage Mart. During an extended stay in the country, she never expects to meet Lord John Blackwood, a wounded war hero who intrigues her like no other man.

Lord John has lived through the worst horrors of war, but nothing could have been as terrifying to his tormented heart as Lady Arabella. She is intoxicating, infuriating, and she makes him want to live again. Suddenly he's writing bad poetry and climbing trees in the pitch-dark night just so he can dance with her as the clock strikes midnight. And even though he knows he can never be the sort of man she deserves, he can't help wanting her. But when the harsh light of day replaces the magic of midnight, can this tormented soul learn to love again?

    "The narrator"

I would not recommend this book. Julia Quinn is one of my favorite.
I would invest on a different narrator and re release this audiobook.
The narrator is overly dramatic when playing the part of the lead. I am being kind with this review.

"good Julia Quinn story but harrible narrator,"
If you could sum up Dancing at Midnight in three words, what would they be?

    change the narrator

Who was your favorite character and why?

main characters were great but the narrator ruined the book. I went out and purchased a hard copy so I could finish it.

Would you be willing to try another one of Lucy Rayner’s performances?

no, I purchased two books by this performer and I want to return them. I would rather read the book myself than listen to her. If anyone chooses to listen to JQ's books narrated by Rosalyn Landor then you would understand what I'm talking about.
So please Ms. Quinn no more performances by Lucy Rayner.
I'm sorry to be so harsh but this needed to be said.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

If the narrator was Rosalyn Landor

    Any additional comments?

Ms. Quinn, as a loyal reader of your fine books please pay more attention to who you or Audible hires to read them...:(

    "Oh the narrator......"

I have this book and have read it multiple times. When I saw there was an audio version now I was excited. That quickly change in the first 15 min. The narrators chosen voice for the heroine was so high pitched ad hauty.. Better suited for a meddling aunt or someone snobbish.

    "Narration lacking"
Would you try another book from Julia Quinn and/or Lucy Rayner?

I love Julia Quinn. This is one of her earliest books, and it shows. The dialogue and plot are just not as sharp as her later books.

Lucy Rayner has this ability to be really shrill and grating. Belle's voice was annoying and very distracting. There is also something a little off in the rhythm of the reading. The narration in between the dialogue felt a bit like it was a metered poem, rather than prose.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Lucy Rayner?

Rosalyn Landor... so smooth, excellent voice. She is a delight.

Good book trashed by very bad narration. Also, Audible Star-rating-system is Inaccurate and thus deceptive

"Love the story not the performance"

This is one of my favourite Julia Quinn books. Sadly not my favourite audio. The performance is dreadful, it in no way captured the sassiness of Bell or the dryness of John, but turned them winey and annoying, it felt like the performance was mocking the characters.

The story is predictable, but I'm a way where you're happy they just get on with it rather than drawing it out. It still remains a favourite book (few Julia Quinn's aren't) but I'm not sure how much I will revisit the audio, if at all...

    "Narration very slow"

Love Julia Quinn but don't know if I can finish this. The narration lacks pace and there are pauses that often make me think audible has stopped playing. Sadly disappointed.
