Publisher's Summary

From the New York Times best-selling author of the Rock Chick series comes a story of love, murder, and second chances....

When small-town Nebraska sheriff Hixon Drake meets Greta Dare, the connection couldn't be stronger, but the timing couldn't be worse.

Dealing with the fallout of a divorce he never wanted and setting up a new home for his kids, Hix becomes that guy, that one he never wanted to be, and puts a stop to things before they can even start. Protecting his kids and himself is his only priority.

Greta, on the other hand, has found the place for her and the brother she adores that's perfect for them - a sleepy little town in Nebraska. She's learned from life that there are no hopes and dreams. The only thing to look forward to is peace. And that's what she works hard to build for herself and her brother. Right up until Hix walks into her life.

Hix can't fight the pull and stay away from Greta for long. And Greta's finding it hard not to hope for something more with all the promise that is Hix.

But when the first murder that's happened in over five decades rocks his small, sleepy county, Hix has got to learn to trust again, convince Greta to take a shot with him, and at the same time catch a killer.

In other words, things are definitely...Complicated.

Excellent Mixture of Romance, Mystery, & Mayhem

Any additional comments?

Another well crafted story that expertly intertwines romance, mystery, and murder and keeps the reader riveted. Hix is sheriff in a quiet little town where crime is rare. He moved there to satisfy his wife's demand to live near her parents. Seven years and two children later, Hix and Hope are divorced and he is trying to establish a new home for his children who are now in their teens. Greta moved to the little town to find a safe and peaceful place to care for her brother. Greta is a stunning beauty who catches Hix's eye while he watches her sing at the Do-Drop Club, an upscale restaurant. Hix and Greta have an immediate and lusty attraction that they unsuccessfully try to resist. The sleepy little town is rocked when murders begin to occur that Hix is working to solve."Complicated" is an excellent story with everything we expect from Kristen Ashley. The narration by Lance Greenfield and Erin Mallon is perfect.. .

Complicated was a pleasure to my senses!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Hix was my favorite character. I loved that he's in his forties. He knows who he is and what he wants. He's a good father and he's smart, sexy, funny and takes care of his own.

Which character – as performed by Lance Greenfield and Erin Mallon – was your favorite?

I loved both Lance and Erin. Their voices were perfect for these characters. The were a pleasure to my ears!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes! I would have loved to have listened to it in one sitting, it was that good.

Any additional comments?

Kristen Ashley always delivers the sexy, strong heroes and the independent, sassy leading ladies. Complicated is a story filled with heat, love, suspense, family and heart. I loved every minute of it. The narrators brought this story to life and kept me in the edge of my seat the entire time. Complicated was a pleasure to my senses and kept me wanting more.

awesome start, too long unfortunately... lost me

great story & characters, and I loved the novelty of a Kristen Ashley being told in 2 voices. Unfortunately, as it tends to happen with her recent books, the story lost its momentum and a good third of it felt unnecessary... still 1 of my favorite romance authors!!

A SUPERNOVA OF SENSATIONS & DELICIOUS COMPLICATION

Kristen Ashley very quickly became an auto-download author for me because her multi-layered stories never disappoint, always entertain and I'm captured from the start by her loveable fictional characters. And, with this plot, KA has outdone and outshone herself as she so skilfully weaved a slow to develop well crafted love story between a vulnerable yet strong Hairdresser/Lounge Singer and a vulnerable yet very alpha Sheriff who'd both experienced love and marriage before. Neither one was looking for love in their small town, neither one was expecting the bag full of complications their relationship would bring, neither one would go unscathed by the challenges brought on by past relationships of various different kinds and I'd like to say neither one let go.. but tut tut that would be a lie.

Detailed descriptions allowed me to conjure up full mental images as each chapter whizzed by telling the story of second chances, stressful situations, small town life, strings, smouldering passion, sizzling chemistry, sexy times, a sinister Mother, a shitty ex wife, a brain-injured son, three torn in two siblings.. and a murder most foul. And I was gripped as it seemed like every chapter threw in new complications, new challenges and new revelations for these two lovers whose rollercoaster romance would be sweet but tested over and over again. However, their HEA destination would be worth every twist, every turn, every tug at their hearts.. and every tear. Dual POV's and Lance and Erin did a fantastic job of narrating this written for Audible love story.

Worth a credit? Definitely.. and, at 18.14 hrs, it's thankfully a COMPLETE story - so no delays to the HEA's, no release dates to watch out for before you lose sight of the intricacies of the daily dimming plot and hallelujah no cliffhangers that'll take another one, two or even three credits before you get the full story. So thank you Kristen and thank you Audible because in this epic emotion filled story is heart, heat, home, humor and happy endings.

Any additional comments?

Complicated is that one sensational audiobook, that you will have you pulling an all nighter! Not being able to press stop on the audio! For fear a missing some a momentous scene.<br/>The storyline has that magnetic flare from the get go!. Willing to pull at your emotions, like a tether, a string and blowing your mind in the process!

I hate audio books, LOVED IT

So, I would only do this for KA but I got an audible subscription and listened to a book. I have tried audio books in the past and never finished. I initially hated being read to but stuck with it and 3 Chapters in I was hooked. Great book as always. Great narrators. The best part was all I accomplished while I listened! Driving, running, laundry, dinner...I work fulltime, am in graduate school part time, and care for my uncle and now Grandmother. Oh and I am happily married!! I don't have time to read anymore and thos beats staying up all night!! There will be more audio books in my future!

5 Aurally Suspenseful Stars!!!

Any additional comments?

In anticipation of being whipped with a wet noodle, I’m admitting this publicly. Complicated is my first EVER Kristen Ashley “read” and what an amazing way to be introduced to this amazing author that I’ve heard about over the last few years but never had the opportunity to read.<br/><br/>This something new I think to Audible in that this book was written exclusively for them and will not be in print until later this year. For me the experience of listening to this book and having no idea what’s going to happen next because it’s never been in print was like listening to one of those old-time radio shows where it’s playing out “before your eyes.” <br/><br/>I was literally on the edge of my seat as the story evolved from beginning to end. So what’s this about you ask? It’s the story of Hixon Drake the Sheriff in this little town in Nebraska and Greta Dare a woman who hasn’t been in town very long who works at the local beauty shop and has a side gig as a lounge singer at the one and only club in town.<br/><br/>There’s an immediate attraction for these two but it’s not as easy as they’d like to believe for them to just even have a one-night stand, for a variety of reasons. The least of which is that Hix just finalized his divorce from his wife of 19 years and there’s all sorts of drama that goes with that situation. Oh and the fact that everyone knows what everyone does in this tiny little town doesn’t help them either. Greta for her part has her younger brother Andy that is her responsibility and these two both broke my heart and made me laugh.<br/><br/>Add to this the first murder in this tiny town in half a century and you’ve got all sorts of Complicated!!! There’s hot and dirty sex, suspense, romance, family love, family drama, actions that keeps everyone on their toes and above all the burgeoning love between Hix and Greta. <br/><br/>I loved these two together so very much. There’s a lightness to their relationship that neither have had in their lives lately and it’s just what they need even if they don’t think so. There’s a draw that neither one of them want to define, but they know whatever they have is not going to be simple but be VERY Complicated, and they have to decide if it’s worth all the trouble. It’s not a smooth road they travel during this book as there are plenty of outside influences that have the ability to break them both emotionally and physically apart. <br/><br/>One of my other favorite parts of this book is Greta’s relationship with Andy and the amount of love she has for this young man that will never become more than what he is today. It takes a special person to take on this kind of responsibility and Greta is a woman that does everything in her power to make sure Andy knows he’s the most important man in her life.<br/><br/>Because of this experience, I’m going to be one-clicking away on Kristen’s books and delving more into her world and reading as much as I can. I’ve found a new author to me and I can’t wait to see where else she can take me with her words.<br/><br/>In conclusion, I would highly recommend downloading this book. Yes it’s quite lengthy at just over 18 hours, BUT, it’s worth every minute and second that you’ll spend listening to it because it’ll be an experience unlike any you’ve previously had with both Kristen’s words and audio books in general!!!

Not Complicated Enough For Me

Lord knows I love KA and audiobooks, so I was excited to hear this one when it was announced it would be available exclusive to Audible first. It started off good and as the story began to unfold, I was eager as to how it would all play out, but was sadly disappointed. It had such potential and just fizzled out. Even the epilogue was lacking the usual KA awesomeness.

I really love KA, this book had everything I could want in a romance novel!! And I for one love that her books are given to us as one book, not 3 or 4 cliffhangers!!! So for me never too long!! Complicated has a lot going on, and in typical KA style it does not disappoint . Erin and Lance really made it work!!!
Definitely worth the credit or coin. Thank You KA for another great listen!!!

KA did her thing yet again and she did it spectacularly!! Hix and Greta were the ish and more!! Loved how this story came together.
I'm not a fan of audible and had to think long and hard about getting this book in this fashion but when it comes to KA the decision wasn't all that hard.
So happy I went with giving audible a try for my fav author.

Loved it

Classic Kristen Ashley, as usual well written characters, amazing H, a bit of a jerk at first, but understandable. The h is amazing and so strong, my eyes watered for her and her brother often during the story. The side characters are lovable and that is one trademark I love from KA. The plot is really good and pages turning, with everything being resolved at the end. Loved it was mainly the H voice throughout the book, reminded me of Golden Trail, and Lance Greenfield performance was great. I just spent nearly 19hr in KA heaven.

There were times I thought it would never end...

Really struggled to keep listening to this from about half way through. There were a few amusing lines amongst many angst ridden scenes. Male lead character was unlikable at times, female lead too stoic. In the end I just didn't care - I just wanred it to end. Definately not a feel good read. Felt like a flimsy, confused story written around a series of sex scenes.

Fabulous!

Wow! When Kristen Ashley is good, she is really, really good. Some of her later books have left me feeling a bit cheated, but with this one she is right back on top form.

This book has a fabulous H and h, a very rocky road to romance, amazing side characters, and an absorbing murder mystery. The sex is super hot but thankfully does not dominate the pace of the book. I love that KA features older characters in her book, and how the history of each of them shapes them and the decisions they make. They make mistakes, screw things up in the heat of the moment and then (like we all do) cool down, analyse the situation and realise they have messed up, so then set about to rectify things. I love how we, as readers, realise that this couple are destined to be together by their thoughts, their actions and reactions, even if the couple themselves are still denying the possibility. Life and love in a good KA book is messy, unpredictable, unfair, heartbreaking, exhilarating, funny, heart warming and life affirming; but never, ever, boring. I listened obsessively to get to the end, and then felt regret that the story had ended. All this illustrates just how truly talented KA is as a writer. Special mention must go to the secondary characters featured in this story as KA manages to make us care about so much more than just the central couple in this book.

Dual narration was fabulous. Unusually (but very successfully) the POV was mainly that of the H which enabled the reader to understand him even when he was behaving like a jerk toward the h (which was a lot in the first half of the book!) If you have not listened to KA on audio before, start with this book. It's very long, but the many story lines surrounding the couple never dragged, and I felt real regret when I got to the end.

Fans of old school Kristen Ashley will rejoice

2.5 stars - It was OK/I liked it

Complicated is an audio only release for the first six months. My review is based on the audio version I listened to.

AUDIO
I am a regular audio book listener and I relisten regularly to other Kristen Ashley books that I enjoy. With the odd exception, I typically first read the written version of a book before listening to the audio version. Having to swap my usual methodology meant I listened more actively than I usually would. It wasn't difficult. If anything, I easier recalled names, places and circumstances as the story went on.

Lance Greenfield and Erin Mallon were the narrators. They did a great job. Their voices were age appropriate. Voice changes for other characters were different enough so that I never wondered who was speaking. And their version of voices for the opposite sex was good. It's a unique skill and I have listened to several audio books where this is poorly done and my enjoyment of the book suffered. I will definitely be on the lookout for other books Lance and Erin have narrated.

My one criticism, and this is not unique to this audio version at all, is on occasion, the tone of the voice does not always reflect the emotion described. If a character is described as sad, happy, angry, tired etc. then the narration should follow. There are times this didn't happen and it caused me to rewind to check if I had missed anything.

Not living in the US nor having a great interest in accents, I cannot comment on the accuracy of the accents. I realise there are regional differences but it's not the kind of detail I focus on. The speech was clear and understandable which means it passes the test for me.

STORYLINE
There are parts I enjoyed and others I thought were underwhelming.

Fans of old school Kristen Ashley will rejoice. Anyone who has enjoyed the Colorado Mountain, Burg, Dream Man, Rock Chick and Magdalene series will likely appreciate the return of such a storyline; a small town, main characters circa 40 years of age, ex wives, children, families and the baggage they bring and a murder to be solved.

The downside of this is I found the overall story to be somewhat stale and a repetition of what has come before. There were many times when the language, mannerisms and even fashions could have been copied from other KA books.

Some of the dramas that occur in the book also felt... perhaps not forced but deliberate? Deliberate in the sense they were used to drive the story and characters but were not in themselves integral to the outcome. Any other incident/circumstance could have just as easily been substituted without the main characters altering course.

My favourite characters were Greta and Andy. They were brilliant and even though it arose from hardship and tragedy, I loved the portrayal of this sister and brother relationship.

I enjoyed learning about Greta's second job as a lounge singer and I liked the music choices. If nothing else this book introduced me to Annie Lennox's song 'Cold'. I've never heard this song before and I loved it. When it's first mentioned in the book I urge you to stop listening/reading the book and listen to the song.

In conclusion, KA fans will likely give this a big thumbs up but for me it's 'same same but different'. Now go Google that term if you're not familiar with it. 🙂

Quintessential Ashley

What did you like most about Complicated?

The depth of story, the feeling of warmth, love, family and friends, no body does it better than Kristen Ashley.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I have a few favorites! Greta for her strength, tenacity and inner beauty. Hix for his alpha badass sexyness. Shaw for the wonderful way he was like his Dad, the way be protected and looked after his sisters & Greta. And last, but not least, Andy, infact we almost stole the story line. What an absolutely beautiful character.

What does Lance Greenfield and Erin Mallon bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

The narrators bring an extra element of emotion to the story line. It's one thing to read a book, but add a great narrator reading with emotion just brings an increditble richness to an already wonderful story. Bravo to both of them.

Any additional comments?

The is classis Kristen Ashley right here, think Colorado Mountain series and The Burg, Complicated totally had the same feel. I wanted to immerse myself in their town and love and fight right along with them. I adore Kristen Ashley's books and this one will be an amazing addion to her bookshelf. It's got all the drama you need, small town, murder, an ex wife you just want to slap, a repulsive Mother, an ex husband you want to shout at then hold tight and say I'll take you back. I will have a major hangover after finishing this book, I need more of it, unfortunately I think it's a standalone, but I need another 10 years in a second book. I'm positive Andy can find a loving relationship. I want to see Shaw find his woman! Do yourself a favour, this is a wonderfully rewarding story.
