Publisher's Summary

At the trial of Christ, Theophilus, brilliant young assessore raised in the Roman aristocracy, stands behind Pontius Pilate and whispers, "Offer to release Barabbas." The strategy backfires, and Theophilus never forgets the sight of an innocent man unjustly suffering the worst of all possible deaths - Roman crucifixion.

Three decades later, Theophilus has proven himself in the legal ranks of the Roman Empire. He has survived the insane rule of Caligula and has weathered the cruel tyrant’s quest to control the woman he loves. He has endured the mindless violence of the gladiator games and the backstabbing intrigue of the treason trials.

Now he must face another evil Caesar, defending the man Paul in Nero’s deranged court. Can Theophilus mount a defense that will keep another innocent man from execution?

The advocate’s first trial altered the course of history. His last will change the fate of an empire.

The Advocate

Would you listen to The Advocate again? Why?

Yes, I would listen to this book again. This was a book that I would not have normally purchased, but I was intrigued and to my surprise it was great. This is a "can't put it down" book. Loved it and will read it again.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Theophilus the main character was my favorite. He was a man of great knowledge, character and pursued the truth. He faced many trials and triumphed it all.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The last chapter.

Any additional comments?

If I could give this book more stars, I would and will recommend it highly to all of my fellow readers.

Historical fiction at its best.

I don't usually like historical fiction but this book was fascinating. The famous figures of history seen as children being educated by another famous scholar was delightful. You could see future personalities developing. There was conflict and action in the first chapter. This book kept the story moving, the intrigue going strong and never bogged down with historical facts. The character growth was believable and not overdone. A truly enjoyable book even without the historical framework.

I would give it 10 stars if I could

I am a Randy singer fan and in my opinion, this is his best work to date. I am of the belief that no narrative will do this book justice- you just have to listen to it. This is definitely a life changing book well worth listening to twice. There is just too much to get it all in the first time around.

Great listen, couldnt stop.

Where does The Advocate rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Its up there with the best of them.

What about David Cochran Heath’s performance did you like?

I liked his inflection and different voices for character dialog. Although sometimes Caligula and other female rolls sounded the same. Good Job overall.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, 15 hours in one day would have been much but 2 days while working was great.

Any additional comments?

A must read(listen) if you love history, story telling, and faith.

Eccellente

Having lived in Italy 11 years, several years with the original Via Appia as our back yard marker, it was easy to become completely immersed in this amazing book. Bravo, bravo, bravissimo.

Loved it!

This is a great way to learn the historical context of the New Testament. This hypothetical story of Theopholis spans the lives of four emperors, Jesus, Peter, Paul and more. Great story. Well read.

Luke addressed his Gospel writings to "Theophilus." This is his captivating story.

Anyone who wants to viscerally experience the events that occurred during the time of the early church in Rome, this is the book for you.

The Advocate

Loved this book.
Would surely recommend.
This book was recommended to me and I am more than thankful. This book could really be three volumes - Vol. I The Nazarene; Vol. II Paul of Tarsus and Vol. III Theophilus. Excellently written, excellently narrated and the detail drew me in at every side. I loved every character and the intricate detail that covered Roman history was magnificent. Mostly, it made me ever so thankful of the great mercy of my God. When people say they want to follow Jesus Christ, our suffering, though at times can be tough, seems close to nothing in comparison to the agony these people suffered for Christ under Roman rule. This was an AWESOME book! 🙌🏾
