Publisher's summary

Hear German photographer Astrid Kirchherr, rock historian Ed Ward, and linguist Geoff Nunberg on this edition of Fresh Air.

Astrid Kirchherr met the Beatles in 1960, before they were famous, when they came to perform in Hamburg, Germany. She took some of the earliest photographs of the group and was engaged to the late Stu Sutcliff, the original bassist for the Beatles.

Then, Ed Ward tells how Vee-Jay Records was destroyed by its own success. One of America's most prominent mid-century record labels, Vee-Jay fell victim to legal problems. There's a new four-disc box set re-issue of the label's greatest hits in collaboration with Shout! Factory Records. It's called Vee-Jay: The Definitive Collection.

Then, Geoff Nunberg on the use of the C-word in current electoral rhetoric. That word is change, and it's what all the candidates promise. [Broadcast Date: January 15, 2008]
