Publisher's summary

The first book in the brand new Captive of Shadows Series.

Love. Joy. Anticipation.

That’s what your wedding day is supposed to be filled with...but not mine.

I’ve never seen my future husband or even heard his voice. I only know that long ago, my father made a vow, and now, I have to fulfill it. They say Kane is a monster, with sharp clawed hands and hoofed feet. They say he’s cruel, violent, and likely to kill me before the end of my first night.

They say...a lot of things.

So when my future husband arrives to collect his debt, I’m terrified of the fate awaiting me.

But not everything is as it seems.

Yes, he is cruel - but he’s also complicated, seductive, and holding secrets of his own. And each day that passes, something wild and passionate stirs between us. Every look, every whisper, and I find myself falling further into the shadows. Not that I expected any different.

After all, my new husband is the King of the Underworld....

Promises, Duties, Love, and Hate

Promised to the Shadow King begins with a promise of Briar to wed the Shadow King, Kane. However, a promise of a daughter was not define to the deal made by Kane and Briar's father. Kane felt he was tricked and promised Briar's father that he will break her.

Briar was tasked with a duty to kill Kane for wrong that was done to her father. The story shows the complexity of both Kane and Briar's characters. Both made promises yet in some ways, both are also looking for some hints or clues of they could trust each other despite their duties where one is to kill and the other to break the other spirit.

The narrator, Isabella Tugman, gave Briar, innocence. She is a pawn used by her father, who felt he was wronged by Kane. She is duty-bound to find and learn as much as she can about Kane. The narrator gave Kane, a responsibilities of a leader, a king and since Kane is Death, he is always brooding and distrustful of mortals. Each characters is recognizable and has their own individualism.

Although this book is short, there are just so much complexity of Briar and Kane's characters. There are times that I can't figure if Kane is willing to hurt Briar or that he cares for her while Briar has three months to find a window of opportunity to kill Kane and yet she feels something for him.

It is a love and hate relationship of which will win out. There seems that there are more to the story than is being told. I definitely want to find out what happens next.

Great read!

This was my first book by Bailey Dark, and it did not disappoint. The story is well written and just draws you into the drama of Kane and Briar. It's very interesting and different than anything I've read before. I can wait to see what happens next.

Good read

I really enjoyed the story and the world the author created. It’s original and interesting. Yes there is a Cliffhanger and characters are very well built. The narrator does a great job bringing the story to life. I honestly recommend.

Needs some polishing and some kind of resolution .

The book starts out with huge promise. Youngest daughter is promised to the king of Death for keeping her mom alive years ago. Kane discovers the deceit because it’s Briar instead of Rose he expects. And it goes down hill from there. There’s no communications and everyone keeps telling her she worthless and beats up on her. For a girl on a mission (what is it. Who knows because we are never told), who’s been trained she sure doesn’t show it except once. It’s a basic damsel in distress with lots of lip licking and short sentences with repetitive words. I think face was used in 5 short sentences in a row. Things like this just get to me. Several sentences could have been combined into two cohesive sentences. It happens several times during the books. Briar acts like she has back bone but always falls apart at the first sign of trouble. And then it just ends. Not even a cliffhanger. Just the end with no resolution whatsoever.

The narrator makes this book better. I honestly think it would have been a dnf if I had to read it.
