People have been living off the land for millions of years, and in recent times, self-sustainability has become a hot topic. Rising costs in supermarkets and the lack of true organic produce have led to more and more people turning to their own gardens to provide some of their food. The only way to eat truly organic and healthy produce is to grow your own, and over the years, I've made the mistakes and learned from them so that I can pass my knowledge on to you. Make no mistake; gardening is not easy, but it is one of the most rewarding things you can do for a healthier life.

Dreaming of Perennials
Where I'm living, it's winter now, the perfect time to plan next year's perennial garden. I loved listening to this book, with its down-to-earth assessment of the different types of beds and clear descriptions of the conditions under which each plant will thrive. I'm now well prepared to prevent damage from pests and ward off blight. I thoroughly enjoyed learning the names and characteristics of each plant. I like how the book is grouped by type of plant; it makes is so much easier to get to know how to take care of them! Well read!

The benefits of Perennial Gardening Explained.
The book does an amazing job at explaining how to plant each type of food in the garden, how it grows and the benefits of the nutrients that the roots of the plants put inside of the soil. I enjoy the information about planting onions and regulation the dandelion flower to reap the benefits of the amount of nutrients inside of them. I didn't even know there was a benefit of making them into a salad and if you want to know about more plants and their nutrition this is also helpful. This book also shows the benefits of using compost and growing your own food to have this pesticide free source of food. There’s useful techniques inside of here as well to remove pests.

Plant Once and Enjoy Your Invasives
I was initially confused by the content of the book. Most garden definitions of perennials focus on flowers, so with the book starting on vegetables I knew that much of the information wasn't relevant. But I listened to the entire book, and am really concerned. It seems focused on beginning gardeners so most readers wouldn't know the majority of plants mentioned should never be planted in a garden. These are the plants that will literally stay with you forever, and invade your neighbor's yards, and any nearby natural areas. She even admits when talking about some of them they can be invasive, and flowers should be removed. This is not easy care, having to control plants to avoid them taking over. And one of the plants she includes, she says check your state laws on the legality of growing it. The red currant can transfer disease to native plants, and is still banned in some parts of the country. There are so many wonderful plants that thrive without taking over, so it is a mystery to me why she seems focused on growing invasive species. With so much focus lately on growing native plants, or at least those that don't threaten natural ecosystems, I can't recommend a book that seems to ignore decades of research.

Perennial gardening - stunning garden for ever!
‘Perennial Gardening’ by Susan Hollister is a worth to read guide about many different kind of bulbs, flowers, herbs and vegetables. They are very valuable plants but also need to be properly maintained. Susan shows how to looking after your plants to have wonderful garden year by year.
I especially love hostas with beautiful, rich leaves but I just hate when slugs eaten them. I don’t try to spread sand around it, but it looks simple and more natural than blue pellets that I really afraid because kids and animals can accidentally taste.
Also I never know that I shouldn’t cut dried steams of tulips as they may never grow again. So I won’t do it anymore.
Susan gives very practical advices also what to do with perennial herbs, how to cut them and what are they favourite position. I love natural medicine so always have herbs in my garden but sometimes they just too poor and have insects on them. I am looking for more audiobooks by Susan Hollister about gardening and how to naturally prevent plants from aphides, slugs and others insects.
I just can’t wait for spring time to prepare my garden that will be even more excited with Susan’s audio book that are well-narrated.

Story
When we use chemical fertilizers, we injure the microbial life that sustains plants and then become increasingly dependent on an arsenal of toxic substances. Teaming with Microbes offers an alternative to this vicious circle and details how to garden in a way that strengthens, rather than destroys, the soil food web. You’ll discover that healthy soil is teeming with life - not just earthworms and insects, but a staggering multitude of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms.

Story
Margaret Roach has been harvesting 30 years of backyard parables - deceptively simple, instructive stories from a life spent digging ever deeper - and has distilled them in this memoir along with her best tips for garden making, discouraging all manner of animal and insect opponents, at-home pickling, and more. After ruminating on the bigger picture in her memoir And I Shall Have Some Peace There, Margaret Roach has returned to the garden, insisting as ever that we must garden with both our head and heart, or as she expresses it, with "horticultural how-to and woo-woo."

Story
There are redwoods in California that were ancient by the time Columbus first landed and pines still alive that germinated around the time humans invented writing. There are Douglas firs as tall as skyscrapers and a banyan tree in Calcutta as big as a football field. From the tallest to the smallest, trees inspire wonder in all of us, and in The Tree, Colin Tudge travels around the world - throughout the United States, the Costa Rican rain forest, Panama and Brazil, India, New Zealand, China, and most of Europe - bringing to life stories and facts about the trees around us.
