Publisher's Summary

Constantly stifled by the rules of Society, spirited Rebecca Rowley enjoys finding ways to quietly - or not so quietly - rebel. But riding bareback and avoiding nosy neighbors are nothing compared to the thrilling secret she is keeping from her family.

When Rebecca’s quick thinking saves the life of a young girl, she unwittingly attracts the attention of the child’s dashing brother, Lieutenant Nicholas Avery. As that attention turns flirtatious, Rebecca is forced to tell him the truth: She is secretly engaged - to the one man her family would never approve of. Fortunately, Lieutenant Avery is a navy man with no wish to marry, or so they both assume as they enter into a friendship. Rebecca hopes to change her family’s mind about her betrothed, but the more she comes to know the handsome lieutenant, the more she wonders if she promised her hand too hastily.

After all her carefully laid plans are shattered during a family crisis, Rebecca must force her heart to decide. Should she stay true to the promise she made or fight for the future she’s only just begun to imagine?

First person narrative is dragging this down

I’m glad others liked this book, and I’m sure it’s a fine, light, and clean story. But I found the first 2/3 slow and uninteresting. I think if I’d realized this was first-person, I would have passed on it. The story is mostly in the heroine’s self-absorbed head, with little dialogue or variety. I stuck with it because books are expensive, and it’s nice to have something on in the background. It gets more interesting toward the latter part.

A new favorite

You know when you finish listening to a book, and you want listen again right after you finish, that it’s a good book. I loved all of the characters and how much chemistry and connection they had. I was hooked. The narrator did a wonderful job! Sometimes narration can ruin a book, but this one was perfect.

Naivety and stubbornness - a lethal combination!

Both the female (Rebecca), and the male (Nicholas) characters in this book were stubborn -however I feel that the female's was longer lasting. She has learned that something happened between her and her secret fiance's families a long time ago, but doesn't know what - and seeks to find out. Meanwhile, she is staying with a brother and sister whom she accidentally came upon when she saved the sister's life, and Rebecca and Nicholas, although both resistant at first, begin to feel something towards each other. However, much she feels towards the brother, she stubbornly holds to the fact that she is "engaged", and naively thinks her so-called fiance is waiting months and months and months for her! Ha! She almost throws away a good, honorable, trustworthy man for her secret fiance, about which her family knows nothing. Until it is finally brought to her attention that she is only holding onto her "secret" finance to flout her independence and individuality against her family. The story was fine. I just got so upset with this stubborn, naive young woman after reading almost the entire book. She was destroying her future just to get back at her family. It was irritating. I guess I've read too many romance novels, as they all seem to follow the same few plot-lines!

unlikable heroine

Rebecca is a drama queen who thinks she knows it all and knows best when she knows nothing causing all this drama because she thinks she knows best. Being stuck in her head for 9 hours made this a hard read.

Absolutely Worth the Credit

I loved this book. I loved the story and the narrator. It left me satisfied and completely happy.

There is also a heart-squeezing, swoon-worthy romantic scene (with just the right amount of heat) that will go down as one of my favorite moments from a regency romance.

Great listen!

Absolutely Delightful

What an absolutely charming book this was! These characters came to life in ways that were truly unique and set them apart in my memory. I absolutely was charmed by Nicholas from the very beginning and Rebecca, for all of her spunk and sometimes thoughtless actions, Wasn’t thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining heroine of the story. The narration was incredibly well done and I will surely be looking out for any books by Ms. Barker in the future!

Above average for this genre

Loved the genuine friendship and real chemistry between the two main characters! The story was engaging and I was interested in all the characters which meant there were no boring bits. I actually wasted a whole Saturday because I couldn't stop listening. The narrator was great, just not as talented as some who are able to perform different characters with different voices. Just finished and have already purchased my next title from this author!
