Hi, I’m Wes Bush, founder of the Product-Led Institute. And in Product-Led Growth, I show you how you can cut your acquisition costs and scale further than you ever thought possible...by making your product the tool that helps you acquire, convert, and retain customers. They say you shouldn't ask your mom whether your business is a good idea, because she loves you and will lie to you. This is technically true, but it misses the point. You shouldn't ask anyone if your business is a good idea. It's a bad question, and everyone will lie to you at least a little. As a matter of fact, it's not their responsibility to tell you the truth. It's your responsibility to find it, and it's worth doing right.

Winning today isn't about beating the competition at the old game. It's about inventing a whole new game - defining a new market category, developing it, and dominating it over time. You can't build a legendary company without building a legendary category. If you think that having the best product is all it takes to win, you're going to lose. In this farsighted, pioneering guide, the founders of Silicon Valley advisory firm Play Bigger rely on data analysis and interviews to understand the inner workings of "category kings".

Although software has become easier to build, launching and scaling new products and services remains difficult. Start-ups face daunting challenges entering the technology ecosystem, including stiff competition, copycats, and ineffective marketing channels. Teams launching new products must consider the advantages of “the network effect”, where a product or service’s value increases as more users engage with it. Apple, Google, Microsoft, and other tech giants utilize network effects, and most tech products incorporate them.

The best products can still lose in the marketplace. Why? They are beaten by stronger product marketing. Yet, product marketing is widely misunderstood. It includes segmenting and targeting customers, positioning products vs. alternatives, creating product collateral, and supporting sales teams. But great product marketing achieves much more: it identifies the best way to bring your product to market, accelerates your product's ability to penetrate markets over time, shapes what the world thinks about your product and your category, and inspires customers to tell your product's story.

Amazon is the fastest company ever to reach $100 billion in sales, and they didn’t reach that landmark by staying in their comfort zone. Risk-taking is the key that unlocked the door to growth at Amazon, but those risks were (and are) intentional, calculated, and strategic. Thomas Edison believed: “I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.” Like Edison, Amazon’s founder Jeff Bezos has also linked experimentation and failure with growth and success.

So, what is it? April Dunford, positioning guru and tech executive, will enlighten you. Her new book Obviously Awesome shows you how to find your product’s “secret sauce” and then sell that sauce to those who crave it.
Having spent years as a startup executive (with 16 product launches under her belt) and a consultant (who’s worked on dozens more), Dunford speaks with authority about breaking through the noise of a crowded market.
Punctuated with witty anecdotes and compelling case studies, Dunford’s book Obviously Awesome is at once entertaining and illuminating. Among the invaluable lessons you’ll learn are:

The best and only book on positioning
I started 2020 off with a new years resolution. 52 books for the year, so a book a week. I had a business goal to read only business books as well, partly to use as incentive to help me reach my goals because I figured after reading 52 books on the same topic, I'd be dying to break off do some fun reading as well. Of all the top rated, best selling business books I've read this year, this is definitely in the top 3 for me. It's also the only book I've found on market positioning. How can any marketer's library be complete without a book on product positioning? This is a must have if you're interested in B2B marketing or any type of marketing. It's simple, clear and exactly what every B2B company should be thinking about, no matter where they are in their journey. I especially enjoyed the author's narration of the book, she's got a great enthusiastic personality behind the tone, which makes the listener's journey that much more enjoyable. She's obviously very passionate about the topic, and knows it very well.

I’ve Listened, Now I’ll Purchase
Amy breaks down the importance of positioning, provides an easy-to-follow framework and examples of good positioning that iterates the importance of this often overlooked element of marketing. How do you message, activate and measure if you aren’t clear about where you currently and want to stand in the markets that matter? This book answers these questions.
I’ve listened. I’ll purchase next because based on what I’ve heard, I will want to mark up and reference many of the ideas include therein.
Also the performance of the author was great -narrated in a comfortable conversational cadence. Side note - for the most part, I don’t like the performances of professional narrators.

Practical and immediately applicable
We’ve been struggling with positioning models and exercises that were more academic and applied to major companies or established brands.
This book has a brilliant framework for startups, new product lines or businesses like ours with many products/customer types and solutions.
It focuses on what really matters for customers and helps you get unstuck from your own “curse of knowledge”
