Publisher's summary
Ari Thór Arason is a local policeman whose tumultuous past and uneasy relationships with the villagers in an idyllically quiet fishing village in Northern Iceland - where no one locks their doors - continue to haunt him.
The peace of this close-knit community is shattered by the murder of a policeman - shot at point-blank range in the dead of night in a deserted house. With a killer on the loose and the dark Arctic winter closing in, it falls to Ari Thór to piece together a puzzle that involves tangled local politics, a compromised new mayor, and a psychiatric ward in Reykjavík where someone is being held against their will.
Then a mysterious young woman moves to the area, on the run from something she dares not reveal, and it becomes all too clear that tragic events from the past are weaving a sinister spell that may threaten them all.

Glad there were two narrators
I read this book right after I finished his book Snowblind. It has two narratives. One is of Ari Thor trying to solve the murder of a fellow police officer. The other is the diary of a young man in a mental institution. The story with Ari Thor was good, but the book could have done without the diary. Thankfully, they different narrators for the different stories.

maybe with a different narrator...
I'm sorry to say that I found Will Damron's narration so stiff and plodding that it interfered with any appreciation I might have had for the story. I almost stopped listening several times, but I stuck with just to know who the killer was and who the guy in the psychiatric hospital was...very disappointing.

This is book 3
Blackout is book 2. Kind of messed up the story for me reading them out of order. Audible needs to correct this.
