Publisher's Summary

Spanning the icy streets of Reykjavik, the Icelandic highlands and cold, isolated fjords, The Darkness is an atmospheric thriller from Ragnar Jonasson, one of the most exciting names in Nordic Noir.

The body of a young Russian woman washes up on an Icelandic shore. After a cursory investigation, the death is declared a suicide and the case is quietly closed.

Over a year later Detective Inspector Hulda Hermannsdóttir of the Reykjavík police is forced into early retirement at 64. She dreads the loneliness, and the memories of her dark past that threaten to come back to haunt her. But before she leaves she is given two weeks to solve a single cold case of her choice. She knows which one: the Russian woman whose hope for asylum ended on the dark, cold shore of an unfamiliar country. Soon Hulda discovers that another young woman vanished at the same time, and that no one is telling her the whole story. Even her colleagues in the police seem determined to put the brakes on her investigation. Meanwhile the clock is ticking.

Hulda will find the killer, even if it means putting her own life in danger.

I jumped at the chance to listen to a new tale of life and death in Iceland. This book was interesting in a new way from others by this author. Nothing was quite as it seemed... the author intended this and by the end of the book, as the story suddenly pulled together I'm glad I invested in it. I'm already inpatient for the next title.

Excellent

This was a highly enjoyable read and an extraordinary performance. This is also a perfect example of how a really good book can be made GREAT by a solid performance from the narrator. I so enjoyed getting to know this main character Hulda. I am a big time Anne Cleeves fan and, after listening to every single audiobook available, I was so sad because I thought “well what the heck will I listen to now?” After getting accustomed to such a prolific writer it seemed like everything was falling short. Then I found this incredible series. I had already read The Island ( which was absolutely wonderful) but didn’t realize that it was part of a series at the time. I am so stoked that it is and that this first book is equally compelling. What a wonderful main character! I fell in love with the woman. It’s like a more self respecting version of Vera Stanhope and that’s really refreshing to me. Thank you Ragnar Jonasson!!!

Terrible book

Really awful story and an even worse ending. Don’t waste your time listening to it, even though it is short.

Great main character!

Really liked this policewoman—great backstory.
would like to see other stories about her exploits.
Good plot twist with unforeseen ending.
Wish the book were longer and the ending different.

Can be difficult to follow

I found it hard at times to follow the switch of characters & their stories; if there were spaces in print at change off characters, the narrator didn't read it that way. I would have liked to follow this novel by book & audible. The last day in the novel was the hardest. Definitely "noir" & I almost stopped listening bc it began to affect my mood. I suggest not listening if you are depressed or struggling with unresolved issues of abuse.

Well done.

Although well written it is, however, not the kind of story that I enjoy reading.

Ho-hum.

Not thrilling enough to be a thriller, especially for fans of Nordic Noir. The Darkness reads more like the first in a series novel but with a disappointing ending.
