Publisher's Summary

In Dark Zone, a race-to-the-finish thriller in the New York Times best-selling Tom Clancy's Op-Center series, the brutal murder of an undercover agent reveals a plot to incite a full-fledged war between Russia and Ukraine.

Former US ambassador to the Ukraine Douglas Flannery meets with an old friend and former spy near New York's South Street Seaport. She is seeking his help to thwart a Russian plan to overrun her native Ukraine, but those for whom she is working propose an infinitely more dangerous scheme, one that could draw in NATO forces and possibly ignite World War III. Moments later, as she jogs along the East River, her throat is slashed.

Within hours, Op-Center learns of the killing, and alarm bells go off. Director Chase Williams and his team have been following events as Ukraine, her NATO allies, and Russia rapidly deploy forces in a dangerous game of brinksmanship. But the secret that Flannery has learned threatens to take the looming battle to a whole new and very lethal level. Using cutting-edge techniques of cyber warfare and spycraft, Op-Center must respond to the rapidly unfolding crisis before the United States is forced to take sides in a conflict that could change history.

    "this is NOT Tom Clancy!"
Would you try another book from the authors and/or Henry Leyva?

I'm a Tom Clancy fan from way back. This is NOT Tom Clancy. I fear that the days of Tom Clancy are over, but rather his titles will be in name only

Would you recommend Tom Clancy's Op-Center: Dark Zone to your friends? Why or why not?

Not if I liked them. Boring book. Not Tom Clancy at all.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Henry Leyva?

Almost anyone really--terrible. Michael Prichard is still the best, but probably too expensive for these wannabies.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    No--I'm returning to audible

    Any additional comments?

I'm not sure how they select Narrators--is it cost? Certainly not talent in this case. Don't the author(s) ever listen to their stories once finished?

    "Just couldn't get interested"
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I started reading this book three times I just couldn't get in to it. Could be because there wasn't a key character. I have gotten as far as chapter 19 before I start looking for an older book to listen to.

What do you think your next listen will be?

    Haven'decided

Would you be willing to try another one of Henry Leyva’s performances?

    No.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Disappointment.

    Any additional comments?

This is the first time I have ever decided to return a book. I am sure that it is just a personal impression.

    "Um....what??"

Love op center but this was so confusing. I'm still not sure who did what. Very disappointed in the writing team. I wouldn't waste the credit or time on this one.

    "What a waste of time"

I kept listening until 3 hours before the end. Always hoping storyline or narrator would turn to the better. One could never tell who was speaking and that combined with the chaotic story made up for a Desaster.
I will be returning the book.

"Pointless -- and on many levels!"
What would have made Tom Clancy's Op-Center: Dark Zone better?

The OpCenter series, when written by or in collaboration with the LIVING Tom Clancy, had been among my favorites. Other recent efforts to posthumously maintain the style and tradition of important authors like Tom Clancy, Robert Ludlum and Steig Larssen have, for the most part, been well-executed. But "Dark Zone" should have remained in the dark. I never saw much point in replacing the entire cast of characters that had been so well developed in the prior OpCenter series; there is certainly no chemistry among the Dark Zone group, and (especially in an audiobook) it became very difficult to keep track of, let alone actually care about, the plethora of new names that the author continued to introduce throughout the story.

The plot was also as pointless as the rest of the book -- no real justification for the US to block or frustrate an ally (Ukraine) in its effort to resist or reverse the Russian annexation of Crimea. And if there was such an explanation, it got lost in the murky plot line and constant name-dropping.

Would you ever listen to anything by the authors again?

Perhaps, but I'd read the reviews first (I did not do that this time).

Would you be willing to try another one of Henry Leyva’s performances?

Probably -- the performance was not up to Audible's usual standard -- some of the dialects were a bit strained -- but I'd give him another shot if the book seemed important enough.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

It finally came to an end so I didn't have to keep listening to it.

    Any additional comments?

Actually listing Tom Clancy as an "author" is really unfair to Clancy. These were not his characters, his plot line, or his style. In fact, other than the name "OpCenter" there was no real "Clancy" here at all. This misappropriation of Tom Clancy's name is -- or should be -- an affront to his legacy. I hope that those who are responsible for protecting that legacy will take note.
