Publisher's Summary

America has enemies - ruthless people that the police, the FBI, even the military can't stop. That's when the U.S. government calls on Will Robie, a stone-cold hitman who never questions orders and always nails his target.

But Will Robie may have just made the first - and last - mistake of his career....

It begins with a hit gone wrong. Robie is dispatched to eliminate a target unusually close to home in Washington, D.C. But something about this mission doesn't seem right to Robie, and he does the unthinkable: He refuses to kill. Now, Robie becomes a target himself and must escape from his own people.

Fleeing the scene, Robie crosses paths with a wayward teenage girl, a 14-year-old runaway from a foster home. But she isn't an ordinary runaway - her parents were murdered, and her own life is in danger. Against all of his professional habits, Robie rescues her and finds he can't walk away. He needs to help her.

Even worse, the more Robie learns about the girl, the more he's convinced she is at the center of a vast cover-up, one that may explain her parents' deaths and stretch to unimaginable levels of power. Now, Robie may have to step out of the shadows in order to save this girl's life... and perhaps his own.

Narration is horrible!

It is insulting to an adult to add cheesy sound effects like gun shots, tires squealing, sirens, etc. It reminded me of a child's book with the buttons down the side- irritating. The two narrators feel disconnected- like they were recorded separate and spliced together. Luckily I've been with Audible a couple of years and know that this is not normal. I got a refund. I also don't think I'm a Baldacci fan. This was the first book by him I've tried. It was only so so- not good.

My First Balducci

Would you consider the audio edition of The Innocent to be better than the print version?

I prefer the audio version. It brings life to the story. I even wanted to by the hardcopy to read along but I dont have time for that. I listen during work and gardening. It makes time pass smoothly. The sound effects and characters make it more interesting and draws me in. I saw the poster ad for this book on the DC Metro and I immediately downloaded it. Also.... I live in DC so I particularly enjoyed the name dropping of the cities and companys throughout the metro area. I hope he's reading this review with a smile!!! # thumbsup!

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes....not wanting to miss a single sentence.I needed complete silence around me. So I used headphones :-)

Which character – as performed by Ron McLarty and Orlagh Cassidy – was your favorite?

Super Agent Vance LOL

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Made me speak outloud during some gripping moments

Too Many Distractions

The narration was not very good. The narrators were not enthused and it was difficult for me to listen to the first few chapters. The sound effects were terrible, if anyone likes spy, hitman espionage, you should listen to the Mitch Rapp series by Vince Flynn and Narrated by George Guidall or Nick Sullivan. I’m sure this is a good book, but the narration of this book killed the story for me.

Beware of audible deals

I bought this book as an audible BOGO, and did not realize I had bought the abridged version because there was nothing to compare it to. I enjoy character development and when I spoke to my spouse, he wondered why there were only 18 chapters, I then realized my error and bought the unabridged version. So much for a “free” book.
I’m enjoying the character and story very much however and look forward to the full 12 hour version.

Well paced, good story

Well paced story, developing characters could have been better, but satisfied overall. Great to listen to.

Enjoyed this story!

The actual story was both interesting and intriguing, and the narrators did an excellent job! Well worth your time.
My only criticism is that the background sound effects were more distracting than helpful - they were just “off” - as in not timed well and the sounds of the different firearms were wrong as well.
