Publisher's Summary

Inside a Los Angeles church, on the altar steps, lies the blood-soaked, decapitated body of a priest. Carefully positioned, legs stretched out, arms crossed over the chest, the most horrifying thing of all is that the priest's head has been replaced by that of a dog. Later, the forensic team discover that on the victim's chest, the figure 3 has been scrawled in blood.

At first Detective Robert Hunter believes that this is a ritualistic killing. But as more bodies surface, he is forced to reassess. All the victims died in the way they feared the most. Their worst nightmares have literally come true. But how could the killer have known? And what links these apparently random victims?

Hunter finds himself on the trail of an elusive and sadistic killer, someone who apparently has the power to read his victims' minds. Someone who can sense what scares his victims the most. Someone who will stop at nothing to achieve his twisted aim.

Brill as usual

I love Chris Carter books both audio and reading self. His imagination is immense and Robert and Garcia characters are so authentic and keep you rooting for them to find the killer. I can't get enough of these books and read over and over. Looking forward to his brand new book too but in meantime off to read Crucifix Killer again.

Great story with captivating ending

This is only the second book in the Robert Hunter series and I'm hooked, listening to this book instead of sleeping, doing chores or cooking!
Love the narrator too. He seems just right for the book's main characters and neither over- or under- plays the tension in the story.
Just about to start book 3....

Another title in the series...

But I can’t help thinking great chunks were copied from the previous novel, most especially Roberts connections to the bar, whisky and seductive women. Shame really.

Too gory for me

I was looking for another detective/murder series and found book 1, The Crucifix Killer, bloodthirsty. This book is even harder to get through. It might suit some, but I’m too squeamish.

another excellent serial killer story by C. Carter

I first listened to Crucifix Killer and this a great edition to the series. Carter really knows to write on serial killers. ok there was a slight hint of supernatural with the 'visions', but it doesn't take away from the suspense and keeping you guessing. really enjoyed it and now onto his next one

Atrocities too graphic - but good storyline

The descriptions of the crimes were unnecessarily graphic and violent.
With a bit more style the writer could have conveyed the gruesomeness without the sordid details being discussed for minutes on end. And I read a lot of thrillers so not too delicate. The storyline overall was quite clever so I didn't get bored.
