Almost as good as Gardner and Riddick

I’ve listened to first three books in this series now and they are good. Thick, edgy plots, main characters who are compelling and the stories are, though a little hard to hear sometimes( creepy things often happen) they are satisfying and complex stories, that’s for sure. Though the 3rd book is a little over the top- a couple characters made some ridiculous, unrealistic choices which led to bad outcomes and I couldn’t help but think it was just thrown in to augment the angst a reader would feel. That bothered me a bit as the main police story line would’ve been equally good and plenty angst laden, without adding these things ( not gonna give away). So, there’s that. My other lil beef is that the narrator is weak on some of his voices- especially the women and children, who all sound like the same woman or same child who drank too much cough syrup and is now loopy from it. But I’m getting used to it. Here I go to start the second boxed set, books 4-6. Wish me luck, gulp.

Sometimes gruesome but I dare you to stop reading!

I agree with several reviewers that the books are pretty graphic and gory but I dare you to quit reading. The plots are gripping and twisted and I did not guess what the final outcome would be. The first book, Pray for the Rays, has a complex and clever plot with the evil that lies within the Ray family. DCI Yorke gets caught in the middle when the murders start and he has to sort out all the potential motives and suspects, since many people dislike the Ray family. I liked the other police characters, although most are not fleshed out too completely. All in all these are good police stories that are compelling, well written and at time gruesome.

Has promise

The stories improved as the books progressed. Narrator read words wrong often. Psychopathic not sycophantic

I have really enjoyed the three box set and looking forward to listening to more of the series

Flawed Gritty crime

Loved some of the police characters, but their complete disregard for sensible procedures became irritating. Violence was a bit over the top. And in book 3 the sloppy editing was annoying. “ a punctuated lung”, repeated sentences, “hyperbowl” rather than “hyperbolee”, etc.

Aubrey Parsons at his best

Great storyline and an outstanding performance by Aubrey Parsons. If you like action and suspense this is a must read

Graphic, Gruesome, and Brutal

If you enjoy graphic and gruesome brutality with nothing remotely pleasant of happy to offset it, this is the series for you.

Stop the Killing!

Apparently, the author of this series is an English teacher, but I think he needs to put down Hamlet. In the past few books he has killed off members of the team, or their spouses. For one unfortunate teen, he killed off his mother, his father and even his beloved pet snake. As a mom to a snake loving teen boy, that one was particularly tough. In all seriousness, it’s a detective story, so there will be death involved. Not every story has a happily ever after, but the constant elimination in good guys every book is a real downer and I probably won’t go on with the series because of it.

Terrible!!

I have read many British detective stories(&listened) but this is the worst!! I bought as 3 part set for one credit, so I wanted to not waste money & complete it. The stories were so gruesome & drawn out!! The narration was just sad, could not do women’s parts & could not keep up with who’s who, just terrible!!

I LOVE EVERYTHING about these books. Narration,storylines,everything. They have action and suspense,with a good team that has your back. Thank you
