Outstanding book! A must for suspense lovers...

This is an excellent book. The suspense is palpable and the build up is superb. This story is so realistic and so believable and so frustrating! My heart goes out to this woman even knowing that she is only a figment of the author's imagination.
Here she is happily going about her life not knowing that her husband is a serial killer. When the truth comes out accidentally she is called his helper and put on trial as an accomplice. She is acquitted but it doesn't matter to the townspeople or the internet stalkers, all those who believe she truly is guilty.
She changes her name, learns how to handle a gun and begins moving from place to place trying to stay anonymous. Somehow she keeps being tracked down and her ex husband continues to send her letters from behind bars.
When first one then a second body turns up at the lake she is living on, she once again finds herself the center of attention and a suspect in the murders.
This is an author I will definitely watch for new books.
Emily Sutton-Smith does a fabulous job narrating.
This book has my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION!

Am I the only one...?

After reading the reviews I decided to use a very precious credit for this book. In particular, several reviewers commented positively on the narrator. Am I the only that struggled with the narration? Ms. Sutton-Smith's voice is good, but the cadence felt all wrong to me. Certain sentences, or sometimes just words spoken too slowly and with a sharp enunciation that felt robotic. It just felt odd that it would randomly happen. I found it distracting to the story. Perhaps it was due to editing more than the narrator?
The story itself was decent and the characters were believable. The heroine was a strong woman and a helluva mother. The family dynamics rang true and the author definitely did well there.
Well played plot twists, and nice suspense.
Overall, a decent use of a credit.

Fast Paced Thriller, Ingenious Web of Deceit

The wife and children of a serial killer find themselves on the run after he is discovered and arrested. It seems no one believes his wife is innocent, including police, familes of the victims, the media and, most dangerous of all, hackers.

This is a fast paced suspense novel with ingenious twists. The characters are well developed and the plot is well conceived.

Emily Sutton-Smith is excellent.

Incredible level of sustained suspense!

For those who like psychological suspense thrillers Stillhouse Lake is a must listen. The book was a Kindle First choice for May 2017. I read it then and anxiously awaited the audio book. Rachel Caine has been writing books for nearly two decades. Stillhouse Lake is the first novel of hers that I have enjoyed. Emily Sutton-Smith's narration is flawless.

I repeat, this novel is and outstanding psychological thriller with lots of action and sustained suspense so strong as to be incredible. It is also a great mystery novel. It is a MUST LISTEN NOVEL.

Wow! I LOVED this book and audio book!

With my long time love, Patricia Cornwell, of Scarpetta fame, struggling to get back on her feet after a couple yawners, I was thrilled to find Rachel Caine's pistol packin' Mama blast onto the literary scene, with kids and dog in tow . Emily Sutton Smith is a great addition to the written work, and not wanting to spoil anything, I'll just say, "Read it, you'll LOVE it!"

Cliffhanger

I was not aware that this book is number one of a series. This book ends on a bit of a Cliffhanger.
I wish that was clearly stated when I purchased it. Otherwise, it was a good book & I finished it in a day & a half.

I can't even finish it and I always finish books. The story is just not plausible. I am moving on.

Boring. dumb. Sooooo drawn out save your money

This book was insanely boring. Not only was the narrator completely monotone for 13 hours the story kept repeating itself. Every chapter was the same paranoid character talking about saving her kids and hiding. There was zero drama, very little plot and incredibly repetitive dialogue. I kept waiting for it to get better and it came up beyond short. Definitely NOT recommending.

Another Poor Selection

Once again, I chose a real snoozer. The story was long and drawn out, and hard to believe. How could a wife not be at all suspicious, and never try to see what was in the converted garage? Gina comes across as either naïve or dumb. I also thought it did not make sense that Gina quickly trusted Sam (pretty much a stranger to her), when the author kept portraying her as hyper cautious, especially when it involved being around her kids. Only part I could comprehend was the extent to which a mom would go to protect her children. As a mom of two, I could definitely relate to this! As for the narration, it was not my favorite, mostly because Emily sounded robotic, and at times, her words were clipped. Maybe she intentionally spoke like that, so as to seem emotionally drained and exhausted from being on the run. Whatever the case, I will not be listening to this audiobook again, and did not appreciate the ridiculous cliffhanger!!!!!

mind-blowing! heartpounding! exciting! thrilling!

Having just finished listening to this book through audible I am still reeling from the ending and I hope there is a second book that will carry this story on! The last couple of chapters packed so many punches and surprises my mouth actually popped open in shock! I can honestly say that this is the best book I have read all year and I want to rave about it so much but that will give away key details of this book and you really need to experience the surprises for yourself!

If people reading this review have read this authors other books do not expect it to be like Morganville….. I adore those books and this one is even better although completely different. It doesn't matter what genre people normally read,  this is a book that NEEDS to be read by everyone so matter their age or sex( not younger readers). This books you the chills, the goosebumps and makes your heart race! I also thought that was very unique and extremely interesting to read it from the other side, by that I mean how the families of the criminals are affected and I liked that the author had the courage to write about this side of it. I have so much respect for this author and the way she is able to create this story with all the twists and turns in it is mind-blowing,  not to mention all the different dynamics of each individual character. This takes a true master of writing to pull this off, and that she has most definitely done!

Its obvious how much I adored this book and I would give it more than 5* if I could and if readers are going to read anything this year, this book has got to be on the list!!!!

HOOKED FROM BEGINNING TO END.

I dont often write reviews but this one surprised me enough to let you all know how utterly I was entranced by this author. There was no slow lead up or "getting to know characters" that you may see with other books... from the start of the book she had you finding every second you could find to see what happens next. Believable and suspenseful with great character definition and not a cliche in sight.
Narrator did an good job and i enjoyed listening to her. No issues here and i read other reviews wondering why they marked the narrator badly??
It is the beginning of a series but the story itself does not leave me feeling that it is unfinished... just makes me look forward to more from Rachel Caine with this genre.
EXCELLENT BOOK, WELL WRITTEN
CLEAR AND EASY TO LISTEN TO NARRATOR.

Great story

Narrator’s voice sounds computerised, but you get used to it. Great story. Worth a listen.
