Story
Sloan McPherson and the Underwater Investigation Unit have discovered a van at the bottom of a murky Florida pond. Sealed inside the watery tomb are the bodies of four teenagers who disappeared 30 years ago after leaving a rock concert. To authorities, it looks like a tragic accident. To Sloan, it looks like murder. Every piece of evidence is starting to connect to a string of cold case vanishings throughout Florida. Clue by clue, Sloan navigates the warm, dark waters where natural predators feed, knowing that the most dangerous one is still above the surface - nesting and dormant.

Publisher's Summary
An Amazon Charts bestseller.
For a Florida police diver, danger rises to the surface in an adventurous thriller by the Wall Street Journal bestselling author of The Naturalist.
Coming from scandalous Florida treasure hunters and drug smugglers, Sloan McPherson is forging her own path, for herself and for her daughter, out from under her family’s shadow. An auxiliary officer for Lauderdale Shores PD, she’s the go-to diver for evidence recovery. Then Sloan finds a fresh kill floating in a canal - a woman whose murky history collides with Sloan’s. Their troubling ties are making Sloan less a potential witness than a suspect. And her colleagues aren’t the only ones following every move she makes. So is the killer.
Stalked by an assassin, pitted against a ruthless cartel searching for a lost fortune, and under watch within her ranks, Sloan has only one ally: the legendary DEA agent who put Sloan’s uncle behind bars. He knows just how deep corruption runs - and the kind of danger Sloan is in. To stay alive, Sloan must stay one step ahead of her enemies - both known and unknown - and a growing conspiracy designed to pull her under.

Investigator with quirky but helpful family...
I am a huge fan of Andrew Mayne. I had never heard of him before he wrote The Naturalist. After listening to that book I went back and purchased his Jessica Blackwood and Space Ops series. This is the first book in the Underwater Investigation Unit series and it looks like it’s going to be a good one!
The publisher’s summary gives a very good overview so I don’t want to add more to the description of events. What I will say is how much I enjoyed listening to this book. Right from the very beginning there is mystery, murder, suspense and intrigue. The story is fast paced and all I know is I WANT MORE!!!!
Susannah Jones does a first rate job narrating.
This book has my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.

Very perky narration
Narrator seems to pickup her own emphasis on certain things making the protagonist always seem flippant and cocky, or just very perky.
Anyone who is narrating a geographically regional story should learn to pronounce the places, it is “POMpano” not “pomPANO”, and it is “BROWard” not “Bro-ward”...most anyone who has been to Florida, let alone lived there knows these, it is distracting to hear them so improperly pronounced.

Andrew, what happened?
First; the narrator narrates well but she is not right for this character. Her softer touch is more for romance not thrillers. This may be part of the story’s problem but I was disappointed overall. There is no ‘beef’ to this action? Thriller? Adventure? The author tells, not shows...as well the characters tell what’s going on instead of being part of the action. Disappointing writing. No character development, not much story development. I was so looking forward to this new novel after reading his last two, especially the Naturalist, but this is not his best work. I may return this one. I probably will not purchase the next one if it’s with the same character.

Superb!
I've loved Andrew Mayne's four novel offbeat The Naturalist series. Based on THE GIRL BENEATH THE SEA his Underwater Investigation Unit series promises to be as good. A young woman named Sloan McPherson is the protagonist with supporting cast including her dad, her perspicacious sub-teen daughter, her daughter's dad, and the ex-DEA agent who jailed Sloan's uncle. I really do not want to include more info not in the publisher's summary, so I'll just add that this novel is a superb suspense thriller that I very highly recommend. Narrator Susannah Jones as the voice of Sloan is outstanding.

Exciting and fun thriller
I love Andrew Mayne and was happy to have a new story. For the first chapter or two, I was distracted by the narrator, who I felt was adding weird inflections and unnecessary pitches to her reading. After I got into the story, I forgot about the narrator and later figured her reading had mellowed. To be fair, I went back to Chapter 1 and finishing, to see if I was just too critical at first. Maybe I was ... but she still seems way to perky in the first chapter or two. Anyway, I loved the characters and the plot and all of the underwater scenes and can't wait for Book 2. Terrific book.

Great Story. Poor Delivery. What Happened To Money
It was a great story, with the technological advanced narco sub. The narrator was horrible and her delivery was bad. She couldn't even pronounce counties and cities in South Florida like "Broward" and "Pompano Beach". Also the word "leisure". Cmon man! The writing was a bit odd at times with the main character talking to herself too much. Then went right into talking to someone. Therefore, you didn't know if it was her talking in her head or to some other character. For someone whose supposed to be tough, she was really trifling and ignorant. Lastly, what happened to the money? They just left it? So who got it? Seems a really stupid way to end it. Especially when it comes to money. The writer needed to tie that up better. Zero chance in real life you leave a half Billion dollars in a boat storage facility! If I pay for the story, tell me the whole f'ing story. No guessing games.

Premise was good but fell short for me :(
The premise pulled me in and I can imagine this kind of story is difficult to write, but honestly I just didn't enjoy this book as much as I'd hoped.
I love reading stories in this genre with a unique angle. I can't decide if the main character unto herself, or the narration execution was grating. Maybe both. I feel she was whiny and immature for someone in this high stress professional position.
I did enjoy the supporting cast more than the main, so perhaps it wasn't merely the narration.
The plot itself caused me to stretch my willing suspension of disbelief quite a bit at times. How long she holds her breath. The "special task force" that the governor just arbitrarily and whimsically puts into place...
Honestly, I likely won't read another book by this author, but glad to see others liked it.
