Publisher's Summary

On a hot July morning on Sweden's idyllic vacation island of Sandhamn, a man takes his dog for a walk and makes a gruesome discovery: a body, tangled in fishing net, has washed ashore.

Police detective Thomas Andreasson is the first to arrive on the scene. Before long, he has identified the deceased as Krister Berggren, a bachelor from the mainland who has been missing for months. All signs point to an accident - until another brutalized corpse is found at the local bed-and-breakfast. But this time it is Berggren's cousin, whom Thomas interviewed in Stockholm just days before.

As the island's residents reel from the news, Thomas turns to his childhood friend, local lawyer Nora Linde. Together, they attempt to unravel the riddles left behind by these two mysterious outsiders - while trying to make sense of the difficult twists their own lives have taken since the shared summer days of their youth.

Awful narration

The story is fine but the narration was very annoying, shrill yet wooden. Will not buy the next in the series as the narrator is the same.

Good at Times, but Unsatisfying

I am a glass half full person so I can easily point out several things I liked about the audio book. The setting is beautiful and remote, the characters are few, but fleshed-out, the writing is easy and flowing. The mystery was traditionally written, more British than Scandinavian. Yet, it was also predictably written. The story starts strong but just seems to run out of steam from the middle point to the end.

The police don't solve it. The solution just happens. The narrator has a wonderful pacing and voices for women and children. The voices for men are hard to sit through.

I have always admired the European view of vacations - taking August off at all costs. Well, I finally found the flaw. What happens to a murder case if it happens the last weeks of July and everyone goes on vacation? Lesson learned -- don't get murdered in late Summer in Europe.

Performance was disappointing

What did you like best about Still Waters? What did you like least?

Story was good, but the performance of it was lacking

What was one of the most memorable moments of Still Waters?

the first time I heard each character being spoken by a different person - and their voices were not pleasant to hear

Would you be willing to try another one of Angela Dawe’s performances?

Perhaps

Was Still Waters worth the listening time?

Again, the story line was interesting

Any additional comments?

I prefer 1 reader rather than multiple readers

Bart Simpson Narrates

I love Scandanavian mysteries, so I was very disappointed I could not get past the narration to enjoy this one. I checked later books in the series, and they are narrated by the same person. Very disappointed, but when I want to hear Bart and Lisa, I'll watch them on tv.

Pretty good

Rated PG 15. Several "F" bombs. Fairly clean other than that. I was surprised with the ending.

Wrong narrator

The shrill, fast voice of he narrator ruined this book for me and because of the American accent made e book sound like a hard-boiled US detective novel. The more laid back Swedish atmosphere was lost.

Lost in translation

A great story that depicts life in Stockholm archipelago nicely. However, if you're Swedish, get the book and read it in Swedish. Some of the names are so badly mispronounced that I could not understand some of them, despite my local knowledge.

Too much fluff.

Struggled to finish this one. A lot of useless information and descriptions. Wanted to like the characters but didn't.

I really like it! The story was good and the narrators clear pronunciation made it easy to follow the story.

"Thomas said"

Good but some annoyances such as repetition of the word archipelago and what sounded like cut and pasted "Thomas said" so many times.

A good listen.

I enjoyed listening to this book. The setting on the island of Sandhamn is beautifully described and sounds tranquil, but it's not long before a body is washed up on the shore and in step the police detectives from Stockholm.
I liked getting to know the characters and their back stories. Hopefully more to follow.
The story is a little predictable but flows well and keeps you interested - it's definitely worth a listen. It would be good to hear more from this author to see how the characters and their relationships develop.
