Publisher's Summary

Twenty years in the future, America perches on the edge of collapse, devastated by drought and dwindling resources. California, now a totalitarian surveillance state controlling the lion's share of the nation's economy, is on the brink of secession. And family man Nathan Fisher finds himself at the heart of a bloody conspiracy that threatens the lives of his loved ones and the future of the country itself. Pursued by Mason Flagg and the sinister Cerberus organization, Nathan and his embattled family - accompanied by tough-as-nails Marine David Quinn - make a desperate run across the blasted wastes of the western United States, seeking sanctuary in Nevada.

Woefully outmanned and outgunned by a cadre of ruthless Russian mercenaries enlisted by Flagg, and closely pursued by the drug cartels that rule the ravaged Southwest, the Fishers need some serious help to survive...but at what price?

    "Another cliffhanger ending!"

How many novels will be in the Fractured State series? For those that like action and suspense Rouge State provides it. Character development is strong. In this series in the year 2035 California is split to the point of war over water rights, a very realistic concern.

    "One dimensional female character"

The female character in this book is a caricature -- she nags, she complains. Full stop. It made the rest of the story unenjoyable because she was so annoying. Painting her as a weak, ball busting stereotype served no plot purpose.

"A great addition to the series"

‘Rogue State’ picks up where the first book (Fractured State) leaves off, but this story is much more fast paced and has a great mix of action and plot development. The characters are interesting and relatable and as always, the author does a great job with the writing. The only bad thing I can say about this book is that it leaves a bit of a cliff hanger which doesn’t wrap up the story nicely (which is a pet peeve of mine). Overall though I really enjoyed the book and can’t wait for the next one in the installment!

The narrator does an amazing job with all the characters and really helps bring the story to life.

    "unworthy followup"

similar style, action and pacing to its pretecessor, but very little added by way of story development or creativity. this book was basically one long action scene linking books 1 and 3. you could skip this book and lose nothing by way of character or plot development. I hate it when authors create fluff to sell more books, and that's what happened here.

    "Very little happens"

Even though the story is action packed and thrilling from beginning to end there is very little progression in the actual story. it's basically listening to 13 hours of hide and seek. Exciting? yes, entertaining? Sure! But just like the game... nothing is actually happening except chasing and running.

"Nothing more than a Story fragment"

Konkoly is a fine writer but like so many other writers these days he seems to have decided to divide his stories into multiple pieces to wring just a little more money out of his readers. This tactic is tolerable when each of the parts of the series is a worthwhile standalone story. Unfortunately that is not the case with Rogue State. Here we have no new plot development, no character development to speak of, nothing that would warrant purchasing this is a standalone novel. Instead, we have a pyrotechnic road trip between the first novel in the series and the third. I might even accept this if the series as a whole were stronger but this is Konkoly's weakest effort ever and so after two fragments, I would counsel "skip the whole thing."

    "Excellent continuation of book 1"

This is an excellent series and I'm looking forward to Book 3! This dystopian future is all about water and various parties trying to control it. Fresh water and environmental damage are real problems and this story hints as to what the world will be like when fresh water is a commodity and drought is devastating.
